After a successful first two seasons, the hit Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why will return for a season 3 in 2019. The third season will consist of 13 episodes. The Internet network posted on their Instagram confirming the third season.
13 Reasons Why creator Brian Yorkey will return as the producer of the series. The third season will begin filming later this year without the original star, Katherine Langford, who recently confirmed that she would be leaving after portraying Hannah Baker for the first two seasons.
“I think 13 Reasons Why will always be an important part of my life. It was the first job I ever had,” Langford said, adding that she planned to maintain her connection with the show’s fans, “even if it’s in a small capacity on social media.”
Yorkey, Joy Gorman, Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Tom McCarthy, Selena Gomez and Steve Golin are all returning as executive producers as well.
The renewal comes less than a month after the release of the second season on May 18th. Currently, 13 Reasons Why is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. The second season drew an average audience of 2.6 million in the U.S. during the first three days after its debut, with the first episode pulling in 6 million viewers in the first three days.
The show battles suicide, bullying, drunk driving and rape which has caused controversy in the media and there have been talks whether there would be a third season or not.
The first season proved to be so controversial that it led to a PSA video being shown at the beginning of the season two. The second season focused on Hannah Baker’s parents fighting the school for not doing anything to prevent suicide and the death of their daughter.
