Indie-pop singer-songwriter Baker Grace recently released her new single/music video, “Painkiller,” a song about finding inner peace and self-love despite the lure of addiction.
Grace explains, “I wrote ‘Painkiller’ after experiencing nightlife in NYC for the first time. I was going out to these places where people were spending 1000 dollars on one bottle of alcohol at the same time as I was going to yoga, therapy, and meditation classes, learning what it means to grow love and happiness from within. The juxtaposition was fascinating to me. It solidified the idea that life’s only true painkiller is finding peace in your mind. Being present, loving and accepting yourself, and practicing gratitude is worth more than gold in my humble opinion. In ‘Painkiller,’ I personify happiness in its most genuine form, and it is sensual, sexy, and flaming with confidence.”
Baker Grace burst onto the scene with the release of her 2019 EP, Girl, I Know, featuring “Handcuffs,” which amassed more than six million streams on Spotify. Since then, she’s dropped a series of EPs and singles, including “The Story,” “Little Magic,” and “Lullaby (Benny Benassi Remix),” along with her 2020 album, Yourz Truly.
Talking about the video, directed by Zac Stracener, Grace shares, “I got to work with one of my good friends Zac Stracener on this project. We have worked together before and have a really great understanding of each other creatively. I know we both wanted to make this one really special. The two of us put a lot of love and hours into this. It was so amazing to work with someone who understands my vision and I am so proud of how we brought this song to life.”
“Painkiller” rolls out on a mid-tempo, sultry rhythm topped by Grace’s oh-so-enticing voice, imbuing the lyrics with sensual temptation. A luminous, gleaming topline juxtaposes against deep, blatting tones that infuse the tune with sleazy shadows.
“Kiss me I’m a pain killer / With no catch / You light it up / I’ll be the match / Kiss me I’m a pain killer / Free your mind / Kiss me I’m a pain killer / Sip me like fine red wine.”
Baker Grace has it going on! With “Painkiller,” she blends aromas of R&B and pop into a delicious, wickedly flavored pop tune.
