Qing Zhao, the pianist and music educator, has carved a notable path in the world of music through her extensive collaborations and educational contributions. Her experiences with renowned musicians have not only enriched her own musical journey but have also positively influenced the young musicians and institutions under her guidance.

One of Zhao’s most impactful experiences was participating in master classes and workshops with legendary musicians like Thomas Allen and Vinson Cole. Reflecting on her time with Thomas Allen, Zhao describes it as profoundly inspiring. “Thomas Allen’s musical talent and deep understanding of music were truly enlightening,” she recalls. Together, they explored the intricacies of various pieces, delving into performance techniques and nuances. Allen’s passion for music and relentless pursuit of artistic excellence deeply resonated with Zhao, inspiring her to persistently pursue excellence in her own artistic endeavors.

At the Aspen Music Festival, Zhao had the opportunity to work with Vinson Cole. The festival, known for attracting some of the finest musicians, provided a unique platform for Zhao to engage with Cole’s distinctive and innovative musical style. “Working with Vinson Cole at the Aspen Music Festival was a rare opportunity. His unique musical approach and creativity were truly inspiring,” Zhao shares. As a collaborative pianist, Zhao’s role was pivotal in providing precise accompaniment and offering insights into repertoire selection, performance techniques, and musical expression.

Beyond her work with Allen and Cole, Zhao recounts her memorable collaboration with Mark Watters, an Emmy Award-winning composer and conductor. In May 2023, Zhao invited Watters to China for an academic exchange and collaboration. Watters, known for his role as the Associate Professor of Contemporary Media & Film Composition Director at the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media, his six Emmy Awards as a composer and conductor, as well as his tenure as the music director for two Olympic Games and his status as a specially invited composer, brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their collaboration.

During their visit to China, they engaged with institutions like Shanghai University and the Communication University of China, sharing insights and experiences in the realm of film scoring. Watters emphasized the importance of integrating music with visual media, highlighting how film scores must not only complement the visuals but also convey the emotional and thematic essence of the film. Zhao was deeply impressed by Watters’ meticulous attention to detail and his relentless pursuit of perfection. “Mark’s musical talent and professional knowledge are truly remarkable. His dedication to every detail and his pursuit of excellence were inspiring,” Zhao notes.

Zhao’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to music education. She integrates music theory, keyboard skills, ensemble rehearsal, and vocal coaching into her curriculum, ensuring that students receive a thorough and diverse education. Her ability to blend practical performance experience with academic instruction has been instrumental in preparing students for successful careers in music.
