Charles On TV explores the emotions of a quarter-life crisis in his new release single and music video titled “Quarter Century”

Going through our 20s is never an easy thing to do, but when you hit the quarter-life crisis, that’s when you know you’re struggling, and Charles On TV delves into everything he is feeling at that moment with his brand new single and music video, titled “Quarter Century”. This follows up his previous single “Another Reason Why”.

Charles On TV, real name Charles Meyer, is a New York City-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist known for his unique sound that blends elements of synth-soul, pop, new wave jazz, and ambient harmonies reminiscent of vocalists from the ’60s and ’70s. His debut single “Love”, a queer love song, introduced listeners to his relatable and introspective storytelling, which is a hallmark of his music. In addition to “Love”, his subsequent singles “Strong Man” and “Golden Alligator” reflect his commitment to honesty and introspection. He has become a standout in the NYC music scene, performing at iconic venues such as the Bowery Electric, Union Pool, and Knitting Factory. His debut EP “Truth & Lies” and fan-favourite single “Another Reason Why” showcase his growth as an artist, while his upcoming single “Quarter Century” promises to further cement his place in the world of music. With his ability to create a retro feel that remains fresh and nostalgic, Charles On TV is sure to make a lasting impact on the music world.

Talking about the inspiration behind the single, Charles On TV said: “I’m sure many people can relate to the idea that sometimes, we wish we could go back and do it all over again. For me, I think about how I should have come out earlier, chose my friends more wisely, and maybe even approached my music career differently. I have been stuck in an unhealthy cycle of comparing myself to others; Instead of being encouraged by my achievements, I’ve been feeling discouraged by what I haven’t achieved. This song is the devil and angel on your shoulder, one telling you to give up and one telling you to never stop believing in your dreams.”

Written and co-produced by Charles Meyer, himself, whilst Adam Krevlin and Jeremy Stern are credited as co-producers too, “Quarter Century” is a self-aware yet questioning song that really emulates relatability as Charles On TV delves into his honesty and insecurities about where he is in life and how he is currently navigating through life itself. Sonically, the track really draws inspiration from the ’70s bringing a funky bassline beat into a mix of commercial pop and indie soul through shimmering synths and colourful instrumentation that mixes amazingly well with Charles On TV’s soulful R&B vocals which he goes on to impress listeners with smooth falsettos. Lyrically, the song touches on self-doubt and looking inwards rather than comparing yourself to your peers or where you thought you would be at the age you are now. It’s a highly relatable track that promotes self-love and not putting pressure on yourself, as you’re exactly where you need to be, all mixed around fresh-yet-nostalgic energy.

The accompanying music video, which was directed by Dylan Siegel, was filmed in Los Angeles and showcases Charles On TV’s performance ability as he adds passion and emotion into the visual of the track, whilst also showing his humourous side during certain scenes as we see him move his head on beat to the track and the ending also shows him pop up from the bush right on time to the beat; before the music video ends, we capture his cute laugh and we can’t help but laugh with him. Add all that to his dance flow along with the crashing of waves and his strong walking pace, and Charles On TV really knows exactly how to be down to earth and present his personality, on-screen – we expect nothing less with an awesome stage name like he has. The slight narration of him travelling across a variety of landscapes suggests he is still finding his way through life’s ups and downs – aren’t we all – and that he is on a mission to understand what the future has in store for him.
