Christoper Nolan’s Dunkirk is one of the most highly anticipated films of the last decade and, as fans of Nolan know, we don’t even know that much about the movie yet. Nolan stays tight-lipped about his projects, but as the teaser trailers made their way around the internet, it became one of the most talked about projects amongst film lovers.
On May 5th, the full-length trailer debuted online and in theaters and during the two minute and 22-second look into the film, fans had to remind themselves to breathe. It completely stole your breath and captivated your senses. You weren’t just watching a trailer, you were seeing the incredible story of the Miracle of Dunkirk played out in front of you and it was overwhelming, to say the least.
Nolan plans to tell the story from three points of view; land, sea, and air and all of them are heart-wrenching in their own ways. There is a dread and sense of hopelessness as the trapped soldiers reason with one another, and themselves, to find the strength and the courage to persevere. The tagline of the trailer says as follows.
‘When 400,000 men couldn’t get home, home came for them’
If you’ve kept up with the Dunkirk social media pages, you’ve been given new pieces of information about the Battle of Dunkirk for weeks now. Christoper Nolan didn’t just create a film, he created an entire experience and he wants to bring you into the thick of it. Dunkirk isn’t a film you’ll go see in a theater and take it for entertainment value, it’s a film that you’ll feel the emotion of for days after.
This specific trailer, more than the previous ones, shows the moments of anguish – they look like they’re realizing that their death is imminent. They’re seeing destruction unfold in front of them in a way they’ve never experienced before. Cillian Murphy loses grounding when he realizes the ship he’s on is heading back to Dunkirk. Soldiers on the beach are looking out and seeing death and despair where life once existed. They’re trapped, and they know a way out seems hopeless.
However, it is called the Miracle of Dunkirk for a reason, soldiers did make it out alive, while many lives were lost, there was enough hope to keep some of the men going, enough strength to help them make it through.
We’re counting down the days until this film premieres, and we’re calling it early, but we can see it being the film of the year, and definitely one of the most talked about in the next decade. You won’t want to miss it.
