Love is complex in itself, never mind adding in perception and how social media can be used to showcase one’s love, and Coyote Eyes has decided to delve right inside with her awesome new single “Gasoline”. The track paints a vivid conception of reality that we all can relate to in one form or another and that’s what makes this so poignant to us all. The newly-released track acts as the follow-up to her 2021 feature on W!tch’s single “Save Me”.
Coyote Eyes, the dark pop alter ego of New York native Jo Eubanks, is a captivating multi-disciplinary artist now based in Los Angeles. Infused with hauntingly captivating melodies, ethereal vocals, and eerie piano compositions, Coyote Eyes masterfully weaves a spellbinding tapestry that is equally tragic and seductive. Having started her journey as a classical singer from an early age, Coyote Eyes’ emotionally charged voice garnered label attention by the age of 16, embodying a depth far beyond her years. Breaking free from societal norms and embracing her creative authenticity, she emerged as Coyote Eyes in 2018, embodying the enigmatic spirit of the coyote – a living riddle and a symbol of duality. Performing regularly in both New York City and Los Angeles, Coyote Eyes explores the complexities of the human experience through her music, capturing a fusion of classical influence and ’90s grunge vibes, likened to artists such as Dolores O’Riordan, Alanis Morisette, and Shirley Manson. Her artistry transcends boundaries, painting a sonic canvas that resonates with those who navigate life’s intricate paradoxes.
Written by JoAnn Davis Eubanks and Jared Chance Taylor, with the latter acting as Producer with Andrew Dixon mixing the track, “Gasoline” is a dark conceptual song that leans heavily into Coyote Eyes’ awesome vocals as she sets the foundations as the beat progresses. The eerie start hooks listeners bringing intensity that is reflected in the message of the track before the chorus hits which brings a spooky pop beat, suggesting that all isn’t as it seems. As the track continues, it becomes more haunting and unfamiliar, linking in well with how what we see on the internet isn’t real life and there can be much more going on in one’s life than what you see over social media.
“The song is very emotionally charged; it starts with this hypnotic, seductive feeling in the verses, then pulls back to a more vulnerable, almost pleading sound in the pre’s, and then drives right into the choruses,” explains Coyote Eyes. “Whenever connections form in isolated environments, things get really intense, really quickly – everything is heightened. Just look at the contestants on dating shows, actors working on location together, even (especially) rehab – there are so many studies about this.”
Coyote Eyes continued by stating that the idea of “Gasoline” was inspired after a long line of experiences where “it seemed like whoever I was seeing at the time had built up some fantasy about me in their own head, then became almost shocked and disappointed to learn that I’m a human being with feelings and flaws. It was almost like I was supposed to enter into the relationship with a gift receipt so that I could be returned if the interior didn’t match the packaging. We’ve become disposable to one another, hence the lyric ‘stepped in my blood and you took it all back’.”
“This song is super important to me because it came to life during a time in my life where I was supposed to visit LA for a week during covid, after living in New York for most of my life, and ended up eventually moving there. It marked the start of a new chapter and a huge turn in my career that I was never expecting,” Coyote Eyes concludes.
