A month or so ago saw Aquarium Drinker release his awesome debut single and music video, titled “By Design”. In doing so, he has brought a new side to indie electro-pop and made an impact on his listeners. This is his first single from his upcoming debut LP, teasing what is to come.
Aquarium Drinker is a Seattle-based multi-discipline artist. The creator of this project started out by exploring his creativity while he was in college where he learned how to use Ableton in 2017. He became a self-taught producer, making the music he wants. Over the years, he honed in on his craft, learning more skills, and working out the type of artist he wants to be. He previously released a debut lo-fi EP in 2020, just before the pandemic, and also dropped some covers and originals on social media platforms as well as SoundCloud, but nothing measures up to the exciting upcoming debut LP that he has worked so hard to create. The solid complete LP is set to drop this year, with his debut single “By Design” being the first taster from the forthcoming collection.

Written and produced by the artist himself, with Cindie Xin and Vanessa Thurlow handling the mix and mastering, “By Design” is an alternative indie electro-pop track that is full of synths that flow through dimension and rhythm to Aquarium Drinker’s emotive vocals. He adds strength and definition with his voice over the lyrics that delve into disappointment and how a disagreement can be difficult around someone who refuses to be harmonious and understandable, especially in a relationship.
The official music video, which has been directed by Brian Bischof and edited by Ena Da, is a pure performance visual which sees Aquarium Drinker walking around in various scenes, intercut throughout with reflection imagery and scenes that see him thinking about the person this song is about. We watch his wandering, his thought process. and his belief in his music as well as his feelings towards the song and why it means so much to him.
Talking about the track, Aquarium Drinker said: “Many of my songs, like this one, are about being disappointed in others. The sole theme of ‘By Design’ is on the points of contention in a relationship with one of my exes. We had differing opinions about a political issue; I couldn’t bring him into my frame of mind because that is how he was raised to think… By Design.”
