Last week saw Brian Justin Crum release his music video for his latest track “I & U”. It is his fourth release of 2019 and it is officially his first single release after he placed in the top 12 of America’s Got Talent: The Champions. The song follows up his previous single “Circles” which was released on the same day as the results of the American spin-off talent show.
Brian Justin Crum is an American singer and actor from California. He started his music career fresh out of high school when he starred in the Broadway musical, Wicked. Not long afterwards, he was also cast for the musicals Altar Boyz, Grease, and Next To Normal. Yet, it was being part of We Will Rock You as Galileo Figaro that gave him rave reviews and led to him winning a few awards. Soon enough, in 2016, with the intention to pursue a music career, he auditioned for the 11th season of NBC’s talent show America’s Got Talent, where he made it to the Final placing a respectable fourth place. Fast forward a few years and he competed in the spin-off show America’s Got Talent: The Champions, which saw him win the public vote in his heat and advancing to the final, where he finished within the top 12. Over the years, he has released a number of singles and remixes with “Show Me Love” being his most-streamed track on Spotify. He is currently working on his debut EP, which we expect the latest tracks “I & U” and “Circles” will be a part of.
The song itself has been written by Ferras, Melanie Fontana, and Lindgren; and was released on June 14, 2019. As for the music video, that was directed by Riley Robbins and was released on June 20, 2019. It was premiered by PRIDE, whilst the song was premiered the week before by HuffPost.
“The video for ‘I & U’ is the most free I’ve ever felt in my queer expression. I spent so many years trying to ‘butch it up’ so that people around would feel more comfortable and so that I could fit into anyone’s little box they wanted to put me in. Being that it is PRIDE month I wanted to dive deep into my expression, who I want to be in the world and what I want that to look like,” Brian Justin Crum explains. “I wanted to feature a diverse cast of women who are strong in their own expression as well. Growing up queer I was surrounded by women who supported me. My friends at school were all girls and it was their mothers (and my own) that loved me for who I was. I think it’s very important that we as gay men rally behind women and fight with them as they have always fought with us.”

Self-expression is so important in music videos, and Brian Justin Crum really shows off his creative freedom with this visual. Not holding back whatsoever, he’s confident and sassy, displaying exactly who he is with no fear of judgement and we are living for it through every single second. The song itself is addictingly catchy and it’s one you can’t help but sing along to. Lyrically, “I & U” is about the ups and downs of a relationship and the emotions that are still there after that relationship ends. His vocals are off the radar, proving his vocal ability, flooding every word with emotion. It’s one powerful track, that you can’t help but love.
The video is a fierce performance piece that allows him to be sultry towards the camera whilst other scenes show different women also acting sultry. It really shows off support not just of the LGBTQ+ community, but also for women, themselves, who – as Brian Justin Crum stated – have also supported the LGBTQ+ community.
In a promotional Instagram post for the video, Brian Justin Crum mentioned Adam Lambert and how he is an inspiration to him because he was “unapologetically himself, gay/queer/glam”, and thanked the American Idol artist as well as the other artists in the world that has given him, Brian Justin Crum, the confidence to be who he truly is.
“I & U” is available to download and stream now. Brian Justin Crum is gearing up to release his debut EP soon, which we really cannot wait for.
