Love bands that are not afraid to unleash their musical diversity and technical prowess? Then Gold Complex are the band for you.
The Toronto based band are a dynamic octet who have been building a strong fanbase in Canada, with headline shows at Lee’s Palace, The Rivoli, Mod Club and the Horseshoe Tavern under their belts. Described by CBC’s Errol Nazareth as “smooth, catchy and sexy”, Gold Complex released their self-titled EP back in April last year, which received national success.
In a bid to take on the rest of the globe with their powerful sound, Gold Complex have unveiled a Deluxe Edition of their EP, with a brand new hand painted album artwork, and a psychedelic deep house remix of the RnB hit ‘Tread On Me’. Showcasing everything from groovy dance tracks to soulful slow jams, the EP is available for free on Soundcloud.
The first track on the EP, ‘Backbone’, was one of their first singles released last year. Along with ‘Tread On Me’, it received regular rotation on radio nationwide and were also featured on Nickelodeon’s Open Heart, which is now on Netflix. In lead singer Will Bowes’ words, ‘Backbone’ is a “sexy, funky tune about conviction – saying what you mean and meaning what you say, when it comes to a relationship.” To coincide with the deluxe EP release, the band released a predominantly black and white music video for the track, which you can view below.
‘O.G.’ is the next track, a vibrant offering which hits you with its jazz inspired sound. It’s incredibly catchy, and we’re obsessed with the brass sounds throughout. Following the big and brash ‘O.G.’ is the very calm ‘Cities & Lovers’. It’s great to have such a contrast during the EP, and it gives the listener a chance to unwind, following the opening two high energy songs. ‘Katrine’ is next, and it has a similar vibe to ‘Cities & Lovers’. The poignant track serves as an emotional inclusion and leads on perfectly to Gold Complex’s RnB track ‘Tread On Me’. The EP ends on a high with an electronic remix of ‘Tread On Me’. Filled with the band’s signature brass sounds, it wraps up the deluxe EP quite nicely.
Gold Complex are currently in the studio recording their debut full length album New Soul, which is due to be released in April 2017. For now, we’re going to be playing their EP on repeat!
