In this interview, Ravell shares insights on his evolving production style, the creative process behind “Calling,” his cultural influences, and the future of his music journey.
With “Calling” being your first release of the year and the third in KAZAA’s discography, how does this track represent the evolution of your production style and the direction you’re taking with your label?
Thank you for recognizing the significance of “Calling” as our first release of the year and the third in KAZAA’s discography! This track holds great importance for us as it reflects both the evolution of our production style and the direction we are taking with the label.
“Calling” incorporates captivating high-hat sounds and showcases your brand’s atmospheric vibe. Could you share more about the creative process behind the track and how you and Jack Trades collaborated to achieve this unique sound?
The initial spark for “Calling” came from a shared vision to create a track that would seamlessly blend our individual artistic styles while pushing the boundaries of what we had previously explored together. We began by exchanging ideas and discussing the emotions and experiences we wanted the track to convey. While creating “Calling,” we challenged each other to think outside of what we each respectively know, while taking individual risks with the production. Ultimately, “Calling” shows the strength of openness and synergy, where various ingenious ideas come together to create something light yet powerful.
Your previous single “Baila” was an energy-packed Latin house cut, paying homage to your Latin roots. How do you infuse your cultural background into your music, and can we expect any similar influences in “Calling”.
When it comes to working with another artist, it’s the perfect opportunity to test out different sounds cooperatively. While “Calling” may not be a direct continuation of the Latin house sound of “Baila,” or even “Siento,” it serves as a reflection of our ongoing journey as artists. With that said, I’m working on releasing more music as I continue honoring and drawing inspiration from my Latin roots while experimenting with various sounds. No rules, just vibes!
Your label, KAZAA, which means “home” in Spanish, was launched in 2021 with the release of “Siento.” How do you envision the role of your label in the electronic music scene, and what criteria do you use when selecting tracks to release under KAZAA?
I envision KAZAA to be a place where artists can find a supportive and nurturing environment to showcase their talent and creativity. In the EDM scene, our primary goal is to contribute to the growth and diversity of the genre. With KAZAA, we aim to be a platform that not only promotes established artists but also discovers and supports up-and-coming talents. We find ourselves looking for records to sign with originality and long-term potential without specific enclosed criteria.
“Calling” has all the elements to become a staple in 2023 summer playlists worldwide. What emotions or experiences do you hope listeners will connect with when they hear this track?
We appreciate you for that honor! We hope “Calling” serves as a soundtrack for memorable moments, whether it’s dancing under the stars at a festival, road-tripping with friends, or simply enjoying a carefree day at the beach. After experiencing some tough times, an upbeat track felt appropriate. “Calling” is meant to supply a daily dose of serotonin!
You’ve received early support from house music legend Kaskade and have built an impactful footprint in the industry. How has your journey been since then, and what lessons have you learned along the way?
It’s been amazing! I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned throughout the years. I truly admire Kaskade’s work ethic, but one of the biggest lessons I took away from it all was to take risks. It sounds easier said than done! I truly believe that if you love something and believe in it, taking risks is what will take you to the next level.
Tell us about your upcoming performances! Do you plan to integrate “Calling” into your performances, and if so, how do you think it will resonate with the audience?
I’m so excited to share that I will be performing at Nocturnal Wonderland 2023! And I’ll most definitely be playing “Calling” for the first time in front of an audience! I’m hoping they will reciprocate the same energy and excitement of my first comeback festival performance after a year-long hiatus. It’s been way too long so I can’t wait to be back on stage and share everything I’ve been working on with everyone!
With your newly-launched imprint and a career filled with remarkable milestones, what are your aspirations for the future, both personally and professionally, and how do you plan to continue pushing the boundaries of your sound and brand?
I had to take some time off due to my mom’s passing. I was living in so much uncertainty for the past year so I wasn’t sure when I was able to come back. But after navigating through it, all I can think about was music and the things I’ve always dreamed of accomplishing. I now have a deeper purpose and a rejuvenated sense of personal and professional life direction. I want to make sure I’m having fun as I continue to build and allow myself to experiment as much as I can, so I can present quality music, content, etc. I’ve been working on new music so that’s something we can all look forward to together!
