When navigating the waters of young adulthood, there are common struggles a person may face. Whether it is anxiety, self-doubt or pressure to live up to high standards, the stress can get overwhelming. Emei reminds us we are not alone in these challenges with her seven-track EP Scatterbrain. The vibrant offering showcases her magnetic alt-pop sound and ability to write songs that are extremely relatable.
The EP commences with the single “711”. The piece seamlessly flows with dramatic, dripping vocals. The bold tune oozing with electro beats is all about questioning our decisions and battling social anxiety. That is something many of us often experience and Emei has a way of making us feel understood in her music. The title track “Scatterbrain” depicts the turbulent mind of a person with ADHD and a need to find calm within that chaos. The tune possesses a Billie Eilish style backdrop and smooth, seductive vocals, crafting the ultimate intoxicating listening experience. Nearing the work’s end is “Cynical”. The intense, daring instrumentation is paired with her powerful and haunting tone emitting a dark ambiance. That sullen soundscape further encapsulates the message of having distrustful, negative and chaotic thoughts. The unique quality of the rousing release makes it a gripping addition to an already animated EP.
Emei is a new alt pop artist who has built a flourishing fan base. The Chinese-American singer competed on Chinese Idol at 15 and landed in third place. Performing a plethora of stadiums across the country, it molded her into the thriving talent she is today. Scatterbrain’s lyrical and sonic ingenuity displays that level of skill masterfully.
