House duo Khool C11ty are currently taking over Instagram with their #InMaHead competition. After releasing their single ‘In Ma Head’, the duo invited fans to upload clips of themselves shuffling to the track. The competition blew up, with over two million combined views across 350+ Instagram videos. The track itself has since received various remixes and support from renowned DJs from across the world.

We recently spoke to Khool C11ty’s Marlon Bennett about the #InMaHead competition, the track itself and what the future has in store for the duo. Check out our chat in full below.

First off – who are Khool C11ty? Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

Both myself (Marlon Bennett) and my best mate Memake David form the house production outfit Khool C11ty, and we hail from North West London.

How did you form the duo and why did you choose the name Khool C11ty?

We formed the duo because we both have different strengths and both of our strengths combined creates great energy and great vibes. We wanted a name that would be easy to remember and represent where we are from. We decided to spell it differently than how you spell it in the dictionary to make us more unique and interesting.

You compose and write your own songs. Can you talk us through your songwriting/production process?

We both love songwriting, generally we start with an idea or concept that hasn’t been done before then we start building the beat. We like to make music that get us and the people chilling in our studio going crazy, once we are all feeling the energy of our projects then we know we are on to something!

Your latest single ‘In Ma Head’ features Victoria Shapiro. What was she like to work with?

Vic has been a joy to work with. Not only does she sound great on the track, she sounds even greater live!

You launched #InMaHead Instagram competition to coincide with the song release. Can you tell us about it and what made you decide to do it?

When we finished making ‘In Ma Head’, we said to ourselves “let’s first send it to some of the big Instagram dancers, see what they think”. We sent it first to Gabby. J. David and Ecruz who both did their routine to our song. The Instagram views between them both was amazing, almost hitting 1 million views. We said, “let’s do a contest and get more people involved” so we could see who could dance the best to the song, before we knew it, hundreds of dancers/shufflers from around the world were making videos for the #InMaHead dance contest!

‘In Ma Head’ has received support from renowned DJs and radio stations. What does it feel like to hear your music on the radio?

It feels great hearing our music on the radio. We love when the DJ announces our song as the next big anthem… it’s even better when they pull it up and play it twice.

You’ve released a remix package for ‘In Ma Head’, do you have a favourite remix out of all the tracks?

The remix package is so strong but if I had to pick my favourites it would be the Tom Frankel and Jack Davies remix. Those two remixers both sound amazing in the club.

Your influences are drawn from UK Garage/Grime/RnB/Soul music – is there anyone in particular you’d like to work with in the future?

I would really love to work with Nile rRogers, Bruno Mars and Tina Turner. I think we could come up with something crazy.

What does the the rest of the year have in store for Khool C11ty?

We are just going to continue gigging and we are now adding the finishing touches to our follow up single, so stay posted!

Thanks to Khool C11ty for their time!

‘In Ma Head’ is out now.
