Jerry Williams is a soulful singer/songwriter with a taste for retro. Her youthful music and unique style pulls her out of the pack to make her primed for the spotlight. We spoke with Williams before she hit the stage for British Summer time to talk about her single, her sound, and her retro music video.
Are you really excited to play today?
Jerry: I can’t believe I’m here to be honest. It’s kind of- I remember thinking about Hyde Park and thinking ‘oh my god, to play there one day’ I know it’s a big thing. It feels really crazy to even be here. I feel really lucky. I can’t wait.
So how would you describe your sound?
Jerry: I say I’m quite Indie Pop, that’s kind of like what people kind of say I sound like. I’ve had people say I sound disco retro before. Which is cool. But yeah, I just write about every day life, growing up, and boys. I guess the songwriting side is more narrative.
You have a really amazing sense of style. (She is wearing stripped yellow pants with a black checkered top.)
Jerry: Thank you, I wasn’t sure if this was a bit too jazzy.
No, you’re playing Hyde Park, it’s fine!
Jerry: So I’m gonna go all out for it.
So tell us about your new single “Mother” and the video.
Jerry: Yes, Mother, I wrote with my friend Dan up in Bristol. And I was kind of going through a time were I felt a bit weird, a bit lost. And I just remember just talking to mom and saying I really just don’t feel like myself at the moment and it literally just came from that. And kind of thinking I just don’t feel myself and talking to my mom about it. And that is what it’s about. Dan, who I wrote it with, knew Ian Matthews from Kasabian. Sent him a text and came and drummed on it. which was crazy but it kind of all happened organically for me which is nice.
And the video is very retro and interesting.
Jerry: Thank you.
And now you have about 8,000 views, last we’ve checked.
Jerry: Yes
How does that feel?
Jerry: Amazing. It’s lovely, it feels really nice that kind of your work gets out there and enjoying it. It’s really nice and kind of humbling, it’s really good.
So what are your plans for the future? Album? Tour? Anything like that?
Jerry: Definitely an EP coming out in September. I’d love to do an album, hopefully I’ll be able to do that in the future. Yeah, hopefully do some tours. I love going around supporting people as well and if I could have my own one that would be unbelievable. I’m just gonna keep focus on the future.
