Track-By-Track Album Review: Katie Costello – Twice The Love

We were lucky enough to grab an interview with Katie Costello. She took time out to answer our questions on her album “Twice The Love“, what it’s like co-founding her record label REBEL POP Records, and what she hopes the future will bring.

Hi Katie, thank you so much for taking the time out to answer these questions. We hope you are doing well. What have you been up to recently?

Thank you! Recently, it’s been a blast promoting my new album “Twice the Love” in LA and New York. I love releasing new music and getting responses from new and old fans. I’ve been playing a lot of shows around LA and New York, as well as Denver, Colorado. I’m always writing new songs and hanging out in nature during my spare time.

You have released your third studio album “Twice The Love”, tell us more about the album.

This album is unlike any of my other releases… In the past, my creative process has been to write all the songs first, then go into the studio and record them. For this new album “Twice the Love” I decided to mix things up. I worked with different songwriter/producers for each song, in a different city, and we recorded as we wrote each track. Each song has a personality of its own, but fits into the overall theme of the album, which is very much based on love… Not just romantic love, but love for yourself, love for life, love for the planet, etc.

If you could describe the album in three words, what words would you choose?

Upbeat, Inspiration, Connection

What was it like to record this album?

It was a tremendous blast recording this album… I learn something new from everyone I work with and this experience was no exception. It was fun traveling to different cities, where the vibe and creative energy is unique to each city. In truth, there were ups and downs… You can hear a range of influences on “Twice the Love” – and that I literally and figuratively traveled to new places making this album. My sound has definitely changed since my last full-length album release. I learned a lot about myself during the making of it.

What makes this album different to the previous albums you have released?

The creative process behind this album is unlike anything I’ve done before. My other albums were produced by one producer, instead of a different one for each song. Also, the sound itself is an evolution from my former releases. Although there are similarities, this album definitely has a more pop and rock feel… The varied production makes it feel like you’re going on a journey listening through it.

Which track is your favourite?

It changes all the time… But right now, it’s “Holiday” – the last track on the album. This is the first song I wrote with producer Justyn Pilbrow in Brooklyn. It’s a song that poured out naturally… I love songs that come out like that. It’s also my favorite to perform live.

What inspired you when making this album?

The current events in the world have inspired me to write about things I’ve been thinking about for years. I wanted this album to feel upbeat, positive and yet, not shying away from the challenges we as individuals face in the world at the moment.

Where did the title of the album “Twice The Love” come from?

There are many meanings to the album title… I’m interested if any hardcore fans can figure out the secret meaning of it. But another aspect of the title is based on the theme of the album – Love in all its forms and interpretations. My hope is that fans feel “Twice the Love” they did before listening to the album!

The album is released on REBEL POP Records, which you also co-founded. Can you tell us more about the record label?

The label I co-founded with my manager Vivekan was born from our experiences in the music industry. I’ve been self-releasing records since 2008, but I never imagined having a label of my own. When we were exploring ways to release my new music, it seemed natural and organic to create a label of our own that represents the kind of sentiment we both value. REBEL POP Records is all about music straight from the heart.

How did your album release show go?

It was so fun! My album release show was in Los Angeles at The Hotel Cafe, the same day the album dropped. I’m from Los Angeles originally, so it was fantastic being back in my OG hometown to celebrate the album release. I think everyone had fun that night.

You also had an event at Rockwood Music Hall in New York on 21st October, how excited were you for this event?

I am so excited to be back at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. I moved to NYC when I was 18 and it’s been my home ever since. Rockwood was the first venue I truly fell in love with and it’s always a blast playing there, let alone with my band! It’s a special venue and I’m looking forward to it.

What else do you have coming up?

I plan to continue touring and promoting my new album “Twice the Love”… Also, I’ll be releasing a music video for my song “Holiday” soon. Stay tuned for tour dates and the new video on my website and social media!

Who do you look up to when it comes to your music?

Mick Jagger. He is an inspiration to me as an artist, songwriter, performer and business person. He’s always fresh, current and yet completely unique… For decades now. I truly admire that.

What do you hope the future will bring?

Peace! But really, I am hoping that my music will shine a bit of light during dark times in the world.

What can we expect from you in the future?

You can definitely expect more Rebel Pop anthems and jams from me in the future… I’m always working on new music and my sound continues to evolve by what I’m inspired by.

Do you have a message for your fans?

Yes… Music reminds me that when humans work together for a common goal and vision, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to. My hope is that my fans feel empowered to be their true self in this world, fighting for what’s right, and spreading a good vibe along the way.

What a great ending message! Thank you so much for the brilliant interview, Katie Costello. We are so looking forward to the music video for “Holiday”, and can’t wait to see what the future brings you.

If you haven’t heard “Twice The Love” yet, we highly recommend you either stream or download the album. It is available on all platforms, right now.
