It wasn’t a mistake that Jean Deaux was named an “NPR Artist to Watch” back in 2019. The “Photosynthesis” singer has taken the music industry by storm and undeniably lived up to the hype ever since. In fact, Deaux has not slowed down since she began releasing music in 2015. Most recently, she released an EP ‘nowhere, fast’ with eight new tracks, including one collaboration with Destin Conrad. This project follows her last album, ‘HEAVY,’ which she shared with listeners in 2023. Now, Deaux is gearing up to hit the road on a headlining tour across the United States throughout the month of June. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, Deaux opens up ‘nowhere, fast,’ touring, and what to expect from her next.
What can you tell us about your brand new EP ‘nowhere, fast’ and the creative process behind that project?
Honestly, I was just mindlessly creating and this EP kind of formed itself in the midst of me being unsure where I would go next creatively. I’m happy with what we ended up with.
Are you happy with the initial reaction from fans and listeners following its release?
Everyone seems to be very proud of the growth and feels as if this is a newer sound I’m leaning into. It’s always interesting and satisfying to hear people’s interpretations.
The lead single from ‘nowhere, fast,’ “Thinkin,” features your friend and long-time collaborator Destin Conrad. What was it like to work with Destin again to create that track?
Destin is one of my best friends and like a little brother to me, so we constantly find inspiration in each other and know each other very well. This was just a song that I knew he could bring something to and I think it came out the way that I intended, so I’m always happy with every collaboration we do together. I love him to death.
And for fans who are just discovering your music, what do you want them to know about you and the music you create?
I want them to know that I often teeter between traditional approaches and more alternative approaches, so I never want people to get used to me doing one thing or have explicit expectations of me. At this point, I know that people are seeing that I deviate from traditional to untraditional and hopefully that is something that doesn’t make new listeners feel unsettled, but it’s what I like to do creatively to keep a balance.
What was it like directing your own video for the recent release of “Roll With Me”?
Essentially, I’ve directed all of my videos, so it always feels the same – nerve-racking and intimidating at times. However, for this shoot I got to collaborate with Kim Cohen, a black woman, and our professional dynamic was definitely a lot better than experiences I’ve had in the past, so I think that it showed in the results which I’m very happy with. This is one of my favorite videos I’ve released.
What are you looking forward to most when it comes to your upcoming tour?
I’m looking forward to reconnecting with fans and hearing how people are responding to the new music and some of the old music that I haven’t performed yet.
Lastly, what else can fans look forward to seeing from you in the near future?
More more more! I will never stop. I will continue to evolve and explore life to the fullest, and I hope anyone listening to my music is doing the same. You never know what I’m gonna do next, so sleep well.
