After hitting the road with MisterWives and captivating audiences across the country, joan is back with new music. The genre-blurring duo recently released a brand new single, “eyes,” which follows the release of another fan-favorite, “heartbodymindsoul.”
Joan continue to capture listeners around the world with their remarkable blend of synth-pop and nostalgia, solidifying their distinctive sonic identity – and it’s clear that fans are in store for a lot more music in 2025. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, joan open up about “eyes,” touring, and more.
What can you tell us about your newest single “eyes” and the inspiration behind it?
This song came really quick but we’ve been sitting on the demo for a while now. We literally just finished it while on tour, actually. Honestly, it’s a commentary on how complex and important the little things are in life. Eyes are just face organs, but for some reason connect us to people we’ve never met, tell us everything we need to know about someone in an instant, make us fall in love, and make us feel like everything’s ok. We were just reflecting on how insane that is, that one small piece of our being can hold so much weight and responsibility — this song came out of that reflection.
How does the sound on this single differ from other tracks you have released in the past?
In a lot of ways it goes back to our roots — trying to embrace those a little bit while trying to create something fresh as well. We’ve only had a sax on a few songs before, but this is the first time we’ve had a proper sax solo on a song I think. Go listen and find out for yourself, but sheesh it hits hard every time. We were losing our minds the whole time we were working on that section of the song.
If you could feature another artist or band on a remix of another recent single, “heartbodymindsoul,” who would you guys choose and why?
Ohhhh good question! Maybe SUGA of BTS – that verse would go crazy.
You just wrapped a tour with MisterWives! What has that experience been like?
It has been absolutely amazing. MisterWives are so sweet and nice to us, their crowds are great. We’ve had a lot of new and old fans at the shows, so it’s been really fun to play for everyone and meet them after.
For fans who are just discovering your music, what do you want them to know about joan and the music you’re creating now?
Now is a perfect time to land in the world of joan i think. In a lot of ways we’re completely starting fresh – we’re right at the start of releasing stuff for our next project. We’re trying to figure out what that project is, but we’re releasing music that is getting us really excited about being artists. We feel more confident right now in who we are and what we want to say in this next era than we ever have. It’s a place for everyone, and we hope you settle right in.
Is there one specific song that you most look forward to performing live for your fans when you’re on stage?
Honestly, “heartbodymindsoul” has been so fun to play live. We didn’t really know how it would translate to a live setting, and it’s been a total blast. It feels huge and fast and so full of energy. The whole place feels like it’s about to explode when we play that song.
Can fans expect more new music before the end of 2024?
We just released “eyes,” and I think that’s it for this year. We’ve got so much music we’re releasing next year though, so stay tuned!
