This year, the Winter Olympics garnered a lot of attention as we encountered some iconic moments and record-breaking performances by the participants. But apart from the sport itself, there was another topic that brought attention to the event – the closing ceremony.
Initially, there were rounds of speculations on the Internet regarding the performances during the closing ceremony. Influences of groups including BTS, 2NE1, EXO and BIGBANG were clearly visible during the event so it was natural for fans to expect these artists to be performing at the event. EXO has been the major contributor to the Hallyu Wave and their songs including “Growl”, “Call Me Baby”, “Overdose” and others have brought music listeners’ attention to K-Pop. Their popularity and influence are evident from the fact that upon the release of their album “The War”, the group was the only boy group to become a quadruple million seller. They have been consistent winners of Daesang and are huge attention grabbers in both domestic and western fashion industry.
It wasn’t just the fans that were excited but also the group itself. Suho, the leader of EXO, said,
“Watching opening and closing ceremonies in other countries, I thought that it’s really incredible to go on that stage. Now that EXO is doing so, it’s a new feeling. I think tears might fall after we complete our performance.”
K-Pop is a huge part of the South Korean Entertainment world and any event would have been incomplete without the inclusion of K-Pop artists. The decision to end the Winter Olympics with EXO and CL was indeed a wise decision.
