YouTube announced today that it will be developing its first-ever Spanish language YouTube Originals projects, including both Originals series and movies. At the forefront of these projects will be global stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Maluma and Sofia Niño de Rivera.
“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our YouTube Originals portfolio with new Spanish language movies and series and to be working with amazing global Latin artists,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube. “Latin America is a region filled with creative storytellers with unique voices, and we’re looking forward to working with them to bring their innovative brand of programming to YouTube fans around the world.”
YouTube’s newest partners will surely attract new viewers not just from around the world, but from different areas of entertainment, including cinema, music and comedy. Gael Garcia Bernal is a Golden Globe Award winning actor who has starred in the films The Motorcycle Diaries, Amores Perros, Y Tu Mamá También, Babel and most recently, Disney’s Coco. Being a music artist, Maluma has already built a strong presence on the YouTube platform with his popular music videos for “Felices los 4,” “Corazón” and “El Perdedor,” which have over 1 billion YouTube views each.
Sofia Niño de Rivera is another important addition, as the comedian is seen as a trailblazer for women comedians everywhere. She has starred in several stand-up specials and scripted series that have each showcased her unique sense of humor.
As of now, there are no details about either Bernal, Maluma or River’s roles in the upcoming projects.
