Gouldian Finch, the solo project of Martin Horntveth, releases his new single, “The Flamingo,” featuring the lush voice of Norwegian pop star Emilie Nicolas. His very first solo album is expected in the fall of 2023.
“Emilie Nicolas has always been at the top of my wish list to sing this song, and collaborating with her was fantastic in every way. Emilie is one of the most talented and funniest people I know, and her enthusiasm for the music was truly touching,” says Horntveth.
While Nicolas says, “‘The Flamingo’ sounds like a billion dollars! It makes me want to party, dance, and groove. I am so proud and happy to be a part of this fantastic solo project”.
Horntveth, perhaps best known as one of the founders of Jaga Jazzist and The National Band, collaborated with lyricist Martin Hagfors on “The Flamingo.”
Talking about “The Flamingo,” Horntveth shares, “The song isn’t about a flamingo, but a flamboyant mafia character who meets his end in a deserted parking lot in the swamps outside a big city. I love how Hagfors always writes so vividly and cinematically, pulling you right into the action.”
Opening on a round, rumbling rhythm, “The Flamingo” flows into a blend of creamy electro-pop and hints of R&B and jazz as Nicolas’ sumptuous voice imbues the lyrics with smooth, plush tones, slightly dreamy and oh-so evocative.
Intertwining harmonic layers give the tune a gliding feel, accented by luminous coloration, aglow with fluid surfaces, curving, dancing, and floating on sinuous textures.
Highlighted by the elegant diva vocals of Emilie Nicolas, “The Flamingo” envelopes listeners in plush waves of choreo-forward music.
