GRAYtheband is an Edmonton-based project led by the talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Gray Ford. Drawing from a childhood filled with diverse musical influences, including his parents’ eclectic mix of new wave, punk, reggae, and classic soul, Gray Ford’s musical journey began with a deep desire to play the drums. Although he initially started with traditional Scottish pipe and drum bands, fate intervened when he received a drum set as a gift and was on his way to forming a garage band with his childhood friend. As the years went by, Gray Ford’s passion for music grew, leading him to channel his teenage angst into songwriting and learning guitar. Soon enough, Gray Ford embarked on one of his inaugural projects, Our Sound Machine. The band’s journey started with an exhilarating performance at a local pub’s open mic, eventually leading to regular gigs around Edmonton. Today, as the frontman of GRAYtheband, Gray Ford continues to captivate audiences with his soulful vocals and skilful instrumentation. With the release of the highly anticipated debut album, “All Done”, GRAYtheband offers a fusion of alternative, neo-soul, and R&B sounds, presenting an unfiltered yet refined take on the genre, forging a unique musical path that resonates deeply with listeners all around the world.
Written by Gray Ford, himself, “All Done” opens with soulful piano chords that progress into a build-up before his deeply emotional voice hits. Lyrically poignant, the track effortlessly resonates with a variety of listeners as GRAYtheband develops an undeniably impactful track. Throughout, they manage to hit us hard with the many different instruments taking the limelight at just the right time, from the start of the drums to the inducing guitar chords to Gray Ford’s incredible vocals. While the repeated title of a chorus is influential, making us realise that stuff we may be worrying about is in the past and it’s over and done with, it’s the lyrics in the one and only verse that not only allows GRAYtheband to open up and get the message across but also gives Gray Ford the chance to encourage his listeners to carry on, letting them know that everything will be all right. As the track comes to a close, GRAYtheband impresses to no end with awesome use of the instruments to create a crescendo ending, whilst Gray Ford adds heart-felt emotion to his remarkable vocal runs, plunging the entire sound into R&B neo-soul that makes this truly unforgettable.
Talking about the track, Gray Ford said: “I was closing a chapter of place and time with this song. Since showing others, folks seem to associate the lyrics and general emotion of the song with their individual trying – and sometimes traumatic – experiences that they have endured.”
