Hey babe, wake up. We’ve got a new Harry Styles music video!
Harry Styles hasn’t left his ‘Harry’s House’ era just yet, but we’re not complaining! Released this Wednesday, Styles’ “Satellite” music video chronicles a dreamy, wistful story of the unrequited love of our robot hero. Surprised? Us too! We love how every music video Harry does; it’s never something you would expect, and every time it’s a thought-provoking masterpiece!
The latest video marks the fourth single that the GRAMMY-award winner has released from his chart-topping third studio album, which has drawn quite a success for him. Not only a surprise win for Album of the Year at the 2023 GRAMMYs, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has since broken a slew of records, including the lead single, “As It Was,” which remained at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 15 weeks and was Spotify’s most-streamed song in 2022.
The “Satellite” music video chronicles the cute romantic adventure of a rare protagonist: an adorable Wall-E-esque robotic hoover Stomper — named after Harry’s unique dance routine, the “Satellite Stomps” on the titular track during “Love on Tour”. The lyrics to “Satellite” eloquently describe one’s quest of reaching out to the cosmos while longing for your crush to notice them. And well, it could be a person or a rover; it doesn’t matter.
Directed by Aube Perrie, the music video opens with Styles preparing for his concert at The Kia Forum, Los Angeles where he performed for 15 nights in January, and during one of his shows, he secretly did the video shoot on stage with the robot — undisclosed to the audience. We follow the visuals from the perspective of the self-propelled robotic pal sweeping up feathers in the green room before being astounded by a broadcast of the Curiosity rover manoeuvring on Mars.
“It has spent over 10 lonely years roaming the surface of the red planet,” a voiceover says of the spacecraft, which consumes its attention as it locks its eyes with the rover and sets off on an epic expedition travelling across the country hoping to reach its long-lost — literal — star-crossed lover, NASA’s Curiosity rover.
As the robot leaves the Kia Forum, it makes its way through the busy stadium, stumbles through the rain, encounters rats on the busy city streets and ventures through gorgeous canyons, barren deserts and snowy mountains, until its final destination — NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida — all hoping to connect with the Curiosity rover.
Ultimately, the robot is greeted by his pal, Harry Styles, as they both reunite in the green meadows, sharing a cute moment together while stargazing. It looks to the sky one last time for the rover, and a red line flashes, signifying the robot’s dwindling battery, and then it turns off. Finally, the camera pans to the Kennedy Space Center behind hinting that they have made it to NASA, where contacting the Curiosity might be possible.
