July 8 marks Jaden Smith’s 18th birthday. Earlier this week, Nylon Magazine announced that Jaden will be on their August cover.
Lately, Jaden, who is currently the face of Louis Vuitton, is making headlines with his gender-fluid fashion style. In May 2015, Jaden wore a dress when he accompanied The Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg to prom. On Instagram, Jaden constantly posts pictures of himself wearing skirts, dresses, and nail polish. He also made headlines when he wore a white Batman suit to Kim and Kanye’s wedding.
When asked about his fashion choices in his Nylon interview, he states:
I’m going to take most of the blows for my fellow MSFTS, So you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him. It just doesn’t matter. I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generation of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.
In Nylon Magazine, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière said that Jaden “represents a generation that has assimilated the codes of true freedom, one that is free of manifestos and questions about gender.”
Although Jaden does receive some hate over his fashion choices, there are also many who fully support him. Many agree that the world is changing for the better, as people learn to be more accepting. Jaden’s fashion statement comes at a crucial time, as more gender-related issues are becoming visible.
Jaden continues to break gender norms, with full support from his parents, who encourage him to be himself. He states, “The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I’m going to keep not caring.”
