It’s no secret that the highly anticipated Suicide Squad has met an extremely mixed response. Some have completely fallen for its dark, twisted and unorthodox nature while some aren’t too pleased. One of the biggest concerns of the viewers has been the lack of appearance from the Joker in the film. It can definitely be argued that Jared Leto could and should have had more screen time since he was absolutely phenomenal as the infamous crime prince.
The actor has now weighed in on the subject and it seems he too believes that his character was not featured enough saying in a recent interview:
“Were there any [scenes] that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.”
Furthermore he has made this statement:
“I wanted to give a lot of options. I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie if I were to die tomorrow. Maybe the studio would roll something out — a rated-R or rated-X performance in there somewhere…I always wished this film was rated R. I actually said that when we were starting it.”
Jared Leto is well known for his method technique. He attempts to embody the character to allow a better onscreen representation as it allows him to better understand their position and personality. This is exactly what he did to prepare for the Joker. From practising different laughs to bestowing extremely strange presents to his crew, Jared did it all. He gave Will Smith a briefcase of bullets which is extremely well thought out since Smith’s character, Deadshot, is excellent with a gun. His hard work certainly payed off as he presented us with a very intriguing and different version of the Joker and we loved it!
He had a much more glamorous feel to his representation and his relationship as Harley’s ‘puddin’ has actually made some view him as ‘loving.’ Jared himself recently said he believes the Joker is a ‘sweetheart.’ Though he remained classically psychotic, damaged and chilling.
Despite some scathing reviews, the film has smashed box-office records. The Squad have made $135.1 million on its opening weekend, one of the best in 2016 so far. Fans have stuck by the movie, showing their love and appreciation for the onscreen mayhem which is pure entertainment.
