Hey Jessia! How’s everything in your world at the moment? Where are you tuning in from today?
Hello! Everything in my world is going well at the moment. I’m currently tuning in from LA.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your new single, ‘Care About Me,’ and what emotions drove you during its creation? Do you have a favourite lyric?
‘Care About Me’ is about watching a relationship slowly fade away, and realizing you deserve better. I think the bridge is my favourite part as it is the point in the song when you find strength and stand up for what you deserve.
How did you visualise the sound of this track?
I’ve been really inspired by Renee Rapp, Tate McRae, and Jessie Murph lately.
How does it feel to see the overwhelming response to ‘Care About Me,’ especially when it resonates with fans on a personal level? Have any memorable fan interactions or stories stood out to you?
Yes! I have been reading all the stories in the comments and it’s amazing to watch my community lift each other. It’s truly beautiful. Some of the DMs I receive have been so touching. This is exactly why I make music. I want to help people when they are going through difficult situations.
Do you have any advice for your fans facing similar relationship challenges or grappling with difficult emotions?
I think actions speak louder than words. So many people stay in toxic relationships because the other person promises to change, but if you don’t actually see change, it’s time to leave and prioritize yourself. We all deserve to be loved and celebrated!
Could you share your creative process with us? How do you find inspiration and transform it into a song – do you start with a melody, lyrics, or a chorus?
I usually start with the lyrics and the melody. I am a very lyric-driven writer, so I feel like that’s always the way I need to start the song.
Have you ever felt a sense of emptiness or a void after completing a song or album release? If so, how do you reignite your creative spark afterwards?
Totally! When I release a song or project, I like to take a step back and allow it to be the world’s for a while. I have put so much of myself into these songs that once they’re released, I need to kind of look at them as a product rather than an emotion. It’s always scary putting your feelings out there, but I love hearing everyone’s interpretations and what the song means to them. I find creativity comes in waves, and I try not to force it anymore. I am most creative when I am not in release mode. I feel like writing mode and release mode need very different energies, so I like to differentiate between the two.
We know 2023 was a blast for you! What were some of your most memorable achievements?
I became an independent artist again, which was a huge step for me. I was also able to tour all over Asia with OneRepublic, and I even got to spend some time in Japan afterwards to do a little soul-searching. I toured all over Canada with Dean Lewis too, which was incredible.
Any memorable or fun anecdotes from your time touring with OneRepublic and Dean Lewis?
My favourite thing is being able to meet fans after the show. I love being able to hear their stories and put faces to the usernames I see online. It’s really cool!
Did you manage to do any exploring in Asia beyond your tour stops? If so, where did you go and what did you do?
YES! The tour was very fast-paced but I did manage to find some time to go out and explore the cities at night. After the tour, I spent a week in Japan by myself and it was incredible. Kyoto is one of my favourite places I’ve visited.
Since you made the big move to go independent, how’s it feeling? What inspired this move, and what’s been the most fulfilling aspect of being in control of your career?
It was bittersweet because I loved the label team I worked with, but it felt SO good to own my master again and not have to ask for anyone else’s approval in order to release a song. I get to release what I want when I want. I feel like my success is way more rewarding now because I’m doing it all by myself.
And, of course, with all the new responsibilities, what are some of the hurdles you’ve faced while juggling everything from writing tunes to running the show?
I think it was more of an emotional hurdle than anything. I had such a big team at the label and to leave that was much like a breakup. I’m not gonna lie, it was really hard, but I did not let that slow me down as an artist. I want to show artists that they can have the same career with or without a label. I think that is where the industry is headed anyway.
We love the bond between you and your fans—it’s just so heartwarming, co-dependent and special! How do you perceive this connection, and what role do you believe they play in your journey as an artist?
My fans are the reason I am here. I am so blessed to have such supportive fans — I honestly see them all as my friends! I love meeting fans in real life or on my live streams, because it’s so chill, it feels like it’s just FaceTime with friends. I love it!
How do you perceive your growth as an artist from your humble beginnings to now? Do you still resonate with your older songs?
I respect the journey I’ve been on! I feel like a lot of my music is testing the waters and I do see the eras in my career. I love looking back and listening to my songs as it takes me back to who I was when I recorded them. I love where all of these songs have brought me to today.
So what’s next on your bucket list for 2024?
I am so excited for the next project! It’s going to be my first independent EP, so I am equal parts terrified and excited!
Before we conclude, let’s spice things up with a quick trivia round! Your fans are eager to learn more about you, so let’s dive in for some fun facts!
- Secret hobbies or weird quirks: I love backpacking and going to foreign countries with no plans at all. I like seeing where life takes me. I get antsy if I don’t have a trip coming up on the calendar. I can’t stay in one place for too long.
- Definition of success: Honestly, it’s the stories and DMs I get from people sharing how my music has changed their lives. I always turn to music when I’m feeling lost, so it feels like I’m repaying that favour — that’s what true success is to me.
- Your music as a soundtrack: I’d love to write a song for a badass female movie, like if they remade Charlie’s Angels (again). I would die to have a song in something like that.
- Your superpower for a day: Teleportation. Hands down. I would love to surf in Australia, go on a safari in Africa, and chill with the penguins in Antarctica all in one day!
- How are your guitar and piano lessons coming along?: Haha! I’m still not great but it’s enough to get me by. I should suck it up and take some actual lessons but I’m so bad at being bad at things. I just want to be able to magically play like Jacob Collier.
- The weirdest food combination you’ve tried: Oooo, good question! I tried a burger with doughnuts as the bun and it SLAPPED! 10/10 would recommend, but it is A LOT, haha.
