As kids we see Disney princess movies and fantasize about love. As children watching that, we dream of one day having a romance just as magical. Unlike those fairytales though, not every relationship can be tied up into the neat little bow of happily ever after. Kat Hamilton’s new EP i wish this was a love story illustrates themes of heartbreak and lust. The singer reveals, “Sometimes it’s not a love story, sometimes it’s everything else.” The five-track body of work features everything from tranquil folk and pop tunes to roaring indie anthems.
“Lightning Bug” is a delicate serenade of passionate vocals skating atop striking yet gentle backdrops. The opening tune is a stunning narration of a partnership where there are moments of unbelievable beauty, but they are fleeting. Just like chasing a lightning bug you are always pursuing that sense of enchantment. “Vultures” is a riveting dark rock release with brooding vocals and piercing piano. The piece portrays the desire to be loved. It is about that need being so strong you will accept any affection even if it is toxic. The powerful line “every time I say I’m done, the vultures always come” is utterly relatable. Concluding with the soft and breathtaking “No Regrets” it is the perfect emotive end.
