Lights, camera, action! Grab your popcorn because we have some exciting news from the world of Indian cinema! Kiran Rao’s delightful bride-swapping comedy-drama, Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies), has been officially chosen as India’s entry for the 2025 Oscars, announced by the Film Federation of India (FFI) on Monday. Outshining a whopping 29 competitors, this charming film showcases the richness and diversity of Indian storytelling.
A Journey Through Competition
In a competitive selection process led by a 13-member jury chaired by filmmaker Jahnu Barua, Laapataa Ladies triumphed over some heavyweights in the running, including the action-packed Ranbir Kapoor-starring Animal and the sci-fi spectacle Kalki 2898 AD. The panel evaluated an array of films spanning various languages, ultimately deciding that Kiran Rao’s latest gem deserves to shine on the international stage. Among the notable contenders were Aattam, which recently bagged the National Award for Best Feature Film, and All We Imagine As Light, a Cannes darling.
“I am deeply honoured and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards,” expressed Rao in a heartfelt statement. “This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope [that] this film will resonate with audiences globally, just as it has in India.” Her enthusiasm is infectious, as she further remarks in a conversation with NDTV: “Even though the film is very particular to India, it still speaks the language of shared hopes for women and progress.”
What’s the Buzz About ‘Laapataa Ladies’?
Released in theatres on March 1, Laapataa Ladies has charmed audiences with its clever narrative and a fresh cast that includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Chhaya Kadam, along with a memorable cameo by veteran actor Ravi Kishan. Although it didn’t break box office records, the film found its cult audience after streaming on Netflix, where word-of-mouth helped it gain traction!
Set in 2001 in rural India, this sophomore romp, based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami, finds two young brides hilariously entwined in a riot of mistaken identities. New brides Jaya and Phool, veiled in their crimson, filigreed marital saris, are accidentally swapped when Phool’s timid groom Deepak mistakenly escorts Jaya out of their overnight train. Now, self-possessed and secretive Jaya temporarily enters Deepak’s joint family, while docile and fragile Phool finds herself abandoned at a remote railway station.
Soon, Phool is befriended by a railway urchin and his accomplice, and sheltered by the coarse but matronly tea kiosk owner Manju Mai. On the other hand, Jaya experiences doting sisterhood, innocent flirtation, and an opportunity to flex her intellect in Deepak’s raucous household. Meanwhile, in a gradually unfurling investigation led by goofy and power-tripping local police officer Shyam Manohar, the grooms cluelessly search for their respective wives.
Merrily paced to a tinkering and hummable score (kudos to ‘O Sajni Re’ by Arijit Singh), Laapataa Ladies gradually exceeds its conceit of being a vibrant heist film, offering clever social commentary on the farce of patriarchal matrimony, societal norms and its stifling demands on women. Effervescently filmed, coupled with Sneha Desai’s engaging screenplay, along with remarkable cinematograph capturing the essence of rural India, and an impressive ensemble cast breathing life into the narrative, Rao’s charming, whimsical hoot untangles its labyrinthine web of kinships with a surprising depth and an endearing hilarity.

This year’s selection underscores the diversity of India’s cinematic landscape, illustrating a commitment to telling powerful stories that resonate on both national and international platforms.
