Margot Robbie has been appearing on the big screen alot lately! Her first major breakout role was in The Wolf of Wall Street and later this year, her much-anticipated role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad will come to life alongside Jared Leto aka The Joker. Currently, she can be seen in the Tina Fey movie Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and she is also going to be starring in this summer’s flick The Legend of Tarzan, opposite Alexander Skarsgard.
You think she’d slow down a little bit, right? Nope. It has now been confirmed that she is set to play Tonya Harding in the biopic I, Tonya.Tonya Harding was a champion figure skater who is unfortunately now best known for the scandal back in 1994 when her competitor at the Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked by a man hired by Jeff Gillooly who was Harding’s husband. The man set out to break Kerrigan’s leg at the U.S. national championships but she only ended up being bruised from the attack and went on to win the silver medal whereas Harding finished eighth. Harding was stripped of her 1994 nationals title and was banned for life by the United States Figure Skating Association after she confessed to obstructing the investigation but claimed that she only knew of the attack afterwards.
I, Tonya is written by Steven Rogers and produced by Bryan Unkeless and Margot Robbie herself. Rogers wrote the script after interviewing both Harding and Gillooly at great length, gathering information about the ridiculousness of what happened. But also capturing the tragic part of the Harding saga of her coming from nothing to rising to the top of figure skating due to her fierce will power and athleticism which saw her become the first American woman to complete the triple axel in major competitions. She was victorious in the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and second in the World Championships.
We think it is going to be an interesting film to watch!
