Chicago House vocalist and Wake Up! Music label boss Pepper Gomez introduces DJ Wall of Sound, Vol. 3: Superfreakme (Remixes), a track inspired by Rick James’ famous hit song, “Super Freak.”
Pepper shares, “We’re all freaks and that’s the coolest thing about us.”
She goes on, “I call this my DJ unity project because I have Fluid Dynamic from Scotland, DJxtee from South Africa, Eric Kupper from New York, TP Corleone, from the birthplace of house, Chicago, and Dominic Sustaita from Texas, and, lastly my Young Gun – Rude Minor with Chicago roots, but currently living in Wisconsin. They have created a party in a box all with the same track! For me as a vocalist, it is an honor to be remixed by such a high-quality and respected squad.”
Encompassing 12 tracks, DJ Wall of Sound, Vol. 3 begins with Eric Kupper’s remix, opening on throbbing synths topped by Pepper’s sensuous sighs. The pushing rhythm gives the tune a propelling cadence as swirling sonic colors pulsate with erotic, beckoning allurement.
Highlights include TP Corleone’s remix, rolling out on a thumping kick-drum capped by percolating, chiming synths that shift to darker hues, followed by streaming, luminous surfaces. At once voluptuous and playful, the harmonics exude a delicious, animated mood.
With its sliding, slick intro, DJxtee’s rendition drips and oozes with erotic surfaces as Pepper’s lightly ricocheting vocals imbue the lyrics with wicked seductive savors. There’s a subtle polymetric feel to the synths, injecting the tune with vibrating, tension-building magnetism.
Rude Minor’s “Deep Ghetto Tech House” remix rides a pounding rhythm as plucking tones infuse the tune with edgy, almost industrial sounds.
The Cappella version from Rude Minor is simultaneously astonishingly innovative and ignores every precedent, blending the luscious clarity of Pepper’s voice with digitally filtered vocals into an anomalous antiphony of repeated textures.
A Chicago remix from Fluid Dynamic ties the project off with flair, merging bright, gleaming surfaces with a loose-feeling rhythm. Mood-wise, this version is more upbeat and more complex with its layers of effervescing energy and rippling ambiance.
Packing half a dozen producers, DJ Wall of Sound, Vol. 3: Superfreakme (Remixes) hopscotch stylishly all over dance music’s landscape.
