Indie-rock singer-songwriter and producer Jesse Judies, aka Nick Bray, releases his new single, “Colors of Youth,” the title track of his forthcoming EP, slated to drop September 19.
The imminent EP, comprising three tracks, relates the story of Nick’s move from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia, and presages his nearly complete full-length album, Coup De Foudre’.
Bray explains, “‘Colors of Youth’ is the first song I wrote after meeting the woman who became my wife. Though I tried to encapsulate my feelings in a coherent manner, only a flurry of words would do, and ‘Three big steps and I’ll walk on the moon, planting the flag, Colors of Youth’ are my favorites because they speak to the adventure and discovery of love.”
He adds, “In the spirit of poetic, life-changing events, the two additional songs to the EP are in the vein of life change; ‘Oumuamua,’ which is about an event so big that you’re forever changed and convinced you must follow your new destiny/deity and ‘Just In Case,’ which is about a previous partner and trying to prepare for disasters, only to realize I have to face those events alone.”
Bray cut his teeth playing guitar for indie darlings, Music For Animals, before fronting EagleWolfSnake. Bray began producing music as Jesse Judies in 2018 when he embarked on his first full-length record, entitled Thoughts In A Loop. After mixing and mastering Thoughts In A Loop, Covid kicked off and Bray relocated to Sydney to avoid being separated from his Australian partner.
Though torn from his San Francisco roots, Bray stayed busy during the pandemic by releasing his single/video, “Chemistry,” in late 2020 and released Thoughts In A Loop in early 2021.
As the pandemic dragged on, Bray began collaborating with Aussie singer/songwriter Sasha March, producer Ollie Brown, and former Lungs and Limbs drummer Matt Power. The collaborations bore fruit in the form of a new record, the upcoming Coup De Foudre’.
“Colors of Youth” rolls out on a gently pitching rhythm and fat, finessed bassline, giving the song a deliciously undulating cadence. Dripping with luminous, tropical flavors, the harmonic surfaces sparkle and glisten with gliding hues as Bray’s soft, dreamy vocals imbue the lyrics with silky, alluring textures.
A blend of pure-pleasure indie-rock wrapped in luscious instrumentation, “Colors of Youth” reveals Jesse Judies coming into his own.
