Northern California rock outfit Mama Said unveils the visuals for “Gimme,” a track lifted from their forthcoming debut album, Change in the Weather, slated to drop February 4, 2022.
Talking about the video, Mama Said shares, “This video was directed and edited by Caleb Sutter of 1700 Film in Napa, CA. It was shot at VonSaal Design Build, the home of artist, sculptor, and designer, Richard Von Saal. The location is bursting with art pieces, from vintage curios to custom modern furniture with a luxurious but decidedly retro and rock and roll feel, perfectly capturing the song’s vibe. The modern cutaway editing brings home the song’s reference to bringing all the pieces of Self to a relationship to create a more profound and whole connection.”
Comprising Jennifer Knight (vocals), Latifa Reeves (vocals), and Derek Bromley (guitar), Mama Said’s sound amalgamates lush flavors of ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s rock into alluring sonic potions boosted by the union of two of rock’s crème de la crème vocalists.
“Gimme” opens on Bromley’s potent, gleaming guitar riding a cavernous bassline and tight, crunching percussion. Knight’s deliciously seductive voice imbues the lyrics with hypnotic, evocative timbres. On the chorus, when the pair of exceptional female voices merge in harmony, the song takes on dazzling tonal brilliance, surging with emotion.
“You gimme love / You gimme peace / You gimme joy, my boy / Whatever’s on the menu / You gimme hope / You gimme strength / I’ll take it all, to call / Whatever’s on the menu, babe.”
Glistening, platinum guitars fill the solo section with glossy leitmotifs as yummy “ooh ooh” harmonies ride overhead, followed by the spangly guitar colors segueing into polished licks, as Bromley struts his gift on the guitar.
With “Gimme,” Mama Said fuses hints of classic rock and layers of contemporary alt-rock, all capped by an elite pairing of voices – Jennifer Knight and Latifa Reeves.
