Say Rex, aka Brandon Rex Brathwaite, recently released “Crazy.” The track is from his forthcoming EP, Run Away.
Originally from Barbados, St. Michael’s parish, Say Rex grew up in New York as the youngest of six sisters and brothers. It was in New York that he intermingled with elite artists such as Joey Bada$$ and the late A$AP Yams. When he was 18-years-old, his spur-of-the-moment performance attracted the attention of a Canadian A&R group, leading to repeated visits to Atlanta, where Say Rex worked with producer Lil C-Gutta, and teamed up with Kevin Gates on “Rider,” which garnered more than 500,000 streams.
Say Rex refers to his sound as “freestyles from the heart,” an amalgamation of R&B, pop, and island savors. Citing influences such as Avicii, Calvin Harris, and Kanye West, Say Rex’s music reflects his spiritual focus, balancing prayer and meditation. Preaching faith and confidence in the process as the conduit to inspiration and realization, according to Say Rex the essential ingredient is, “Feeling worth it, strong enough within myself to project it out.”
“Crazy” opens on velvety, swirling colors emerging from the synths, and then flows into a pop-flavored tropical melody full of shimmering hues atop galvanizing syncopated percussion. A brawny, contagious rhythm infuses the tune with sensuous dynamic pulses, as Say Rex’s silky voice, with delicious hints of suave timbres, delivers sumptuous tinges of texture. It’s a stylish, sexy voice, rife with buttery surfaces and captivating relishes of charismatic warmth.
Creamy, sparkling breakdowns imbue the gleaming harmonics with tasty sonic shifts, as well as lingering nuanced washes of tantalizing pigments, pressure, and cool proximity.
“You must be crazy / Outta your mind / You must be crazy / Think you’ll find another like me / You must be crazy / Before you’re out of time / You must be crazy.”
“Crazy” is crazily compelling, full of alluring blushes of glistening colors, a magnetically surging rhythm, and the yummy voice of Say Rex.
