It’s high time to freak out lovers as ‘Meltdown’ is finally here!
Ahead of the release of his third solo album, Niall Horan goes into ‘Meltdown‘ as he unveils his second single today (April 28) via Capitol Records. The song features on the chart-topping global superstar’s forthcoming album, The Show, slated to release via Capitol Records on June 9.
The Show, embellished with some of Horan’s most vulnerable songwriting, is a profound reflection on an array of topics — mental health, the unfathomable complexities of life, the perplexing nature of love and relationships, and everything in between — taking in complex emotions and break them down into poignant melodies that, in the end, proclaim about your listening to your heart to its absolute truth.
Niall Horan is still regarded as one of the most underappreciated performers in the business despite having amassed 22 million monthly Spotify listeners, 100+ million social media followers, and tremendous love and support from billions of music buffs since his One Direction days.
He’s a gifted musician with impeccable taste who has a thorough understanding of diverse musical styles evolved over the years. He has proven to be a prolific hitmaker and powerhouse onstage performer who undoubtedly deserves much more recognition and accolades for his mellifluous vocals, astonishing songwriting prowess and musical versatility with a seamless blend of pop, rock, country, and folk sounds.
Niall produced ‘Meltdown’ in collaboration with Joel Little and John Ryan, as well as co-writer Amy Allen. “The song is basically about feeling anxious and being in that kind of freaking out moment but knowing deep down that everything will be alright,” Horan wrote on Instagram after announcing the single. Mirroring that idea, the song is equal parts provoking and soothing, which feels like a comforting, warm hug on a chilly winter day which gives solace in the face of darkness.
As the Irish popstar opens the astounding pop anthem crooning, “Talkin’ to yourself in the bathroom/ Losin’ your mind in the mirror like you have to/ Screamin’ in your car in the driveway/ Spinnin’ out-think your life’s going sideways,” it conveys the frenzy of anxiety and panic one goes through in a way that strikes a chord with almost everyone.
The song acknowledges the complicated emotions that frequently evoke these frantic spirals and doesn’t try to dismiss or invalidate them by burying melancholia underneath the speckled sunshine and groovy melodies. Instead, the cathartic anthem relentlessly echoes the heightened anxiety and hysteria, then twists the chorus into a moment of sweet reassurance for his listeners as he hums, “When it all melts down, I’ll be there.”
Sonically, Horan describes it perfectly: “The tempo of the song and the groove intensifies that feeling of spiralling out of control and adds even more urgency to the panic and irrational thinking. In the chorus, there is a major shift in the mood as there is some calm brought to the chaos. It gives the feeling of ‘Everything will be alright.’”
The singer enlightens the driving force behind his more intentional approach to songwriting: a heartfelt desire to provide his fans with the same sense of catharsis that he unfailingly finds in music. “Whenever I’m having some kind of issue, the easiest thing is to sit at the piano and let it all out, and it’s not until I listen back that I realise, ‘Jesus, that was honest,'” he explains.
Stream, purchase and listen to ‘Meltdown’ here! We know we will jam it through the weekend, the following weekend, the next, and so on, till the next lifetime. No kidding!
