On her latest album ‘Buzz’, Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI pulls from the depths of her soul to produce her most profound, and emotionally mature material to date.
Tackling themes of heartbreak, self-love, and romance, the ‘Every Summertime’ singer seems to go to great lengths to ponder the complexities of modern-life, whilst also embracing her inner most truth, across an introspective collection of 13 life-affirming songs that include previous single releases ’24’ and ‘Too Much of a Good Thing’.
Taking inspiration from other “lane-paving women”, whose confessional, and honest lyrics have become something of a cosmic guide – most notably Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, Liz Phair, and Joni Mitchell – NIKI’s songwriting remains as intimate as ever, with many of the tracks featured on the LP successfully showcasing her both her artistic growth, and ability to cultivate her own elastic approach to guitar.
In a bid to perhaps further enhance this creative and personal sea change, NIKI teams up with an A-list selection of producers, most notably Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Sara Bareilles) and Ethan Gruska (Fiona Apple, Phoebe Bridgers).
“I went through an identity crisis,” the now 25-year-old star says of the record. “It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. I named it ‘Buzz’ because it feels like I’m on the precipice of something about to happen.”
