Singer-songwriter Olivia O’Brien gained fame earlier this year for her collaboration on Gnash’s track, “I Hate U I Love U,” but the 16-year-old rising star is only getting started and most impressively, she is completely wise beyond her years.
What makes this teen such a light in the music business is just how authentic she truly is, writing all of her own music. She started off simply posting covers and originals onto her SoundCloud account. It was Gnash who then came across O’Brien’s track, “hate u love u” and remastered the song, adding his own verses.
Not long after “I Hate U I Love U” began to quickly climb the charts, O’Brien signed with Island Records. She followed up the breakthrough hit with her debut solo single, “Trust Issues” last month, which is an empowering and real track for young women to relate to. In her most recent work, the talented teen joined forces with Blackbear to create “Root Beer Float,” a catchy and upbeat song that showcases her diversity as an artist, straying away from the introspective vibe given off by her last two singles. Lyrics from the dance track include “Pour some whiskey, feeling frisky/We should make a root beer float.” Check out “Root Beer Float” below and let us know what you think by tweeting at @CelebMix!
