OneRepublic have unveiled the music video for their latest single ‘Wherever I Go’, which was released last week.

The video for ‘Wherever I Go’ was directed by Joseph Kahn (Taylor Swift, Eminem), with actor Kenneth Choi (American Crime Story, Wolf of Wall Street, and Sons of Anarchy) taking the lead role. In the video we see Choi going about his daily routine, which seems to be monotonous. As he stands in a lift, he catches scent of the nearby female before being transported to his grey and dull workplace, where he begins to lose control.

Soon enough, the entire office begins to dance and Choi is wheeled into a white and gold room where OneRepublic are performing. When he emerges from the room, his original office bursts into colour as everyone continues to dance around. Choi even falls in love with the lady from the lift, before he is snapped back into reality as the entire thing was just a dream.

Speaking on the creation of the video to Wonderland Magazine, frontman Ryan Tedder said: ‘It’s a bit of a mad kind of unicorn. It’s so bizarre. For a lot of the videos we’ve done, I’ve come up with the treatments, and I wondered if people would this one was a bit crazy, but they went for it! You’re going to think ‘How the hell did this song create that visual in his head?’

The band only make a short appearance in the video, but Tedder also makes an appearance in the tube sequence, in a fake vintage advert for Budweiser. “Music and advertising have always gone hand in hand, but oftentimes they’re not collaborative,” he told Adweek.

Tedder said he told Budweiser, “If we do something that is too obvious, it will come off as so uncool and so not believable that it’ll backfire. If we’re going to do product placement—and every video pretty much has product placement—let’s figure out the most savvy way to do it that’s actually funny and interesting.”

‘Wherever I Go’ will be also be used in Budweiser’s Summer Olympics campaign. “This song is a great summer anthem, which makes it the perfect background music for our upcoming commercial that spotlights Team Budweiser, our team of Olympic and Paralympic athletes,” said Eelco van der Noll, vp of experiential for Anheuser-Busch.

‘Wherever I Go’ is the first single to be taken from OneRepublic’s upcoming fourth album which will be released later this year. We look forward to the band’s first UK live performance of the song during Britain’s Got Talent’s semi-finals on May 23.
