Last week saw Selena Gomez sat at the top of the charts with her ‘Revival’ album. However released today is the November 7th-dated Billboard 200 chart which shows that the former Disney star’s record has fallen to Number #7. Instead, acapella group Pentatonix have stolen the top position… and rightly so. Scoring their first Number #1 with their new self-titled album, the five-piece group beat Demi Lovato’s ‘Confident’ which secured Number #2 and The Weeknd’s ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ at #3.
The Grammy award winning act whose record debuts a complete tracklist of original songs, except for a cover of Shai’s ‘If I Ever Fall in Love’ (unless you’re lucky to get a hold of the Deluxe version which has a few more covers), have made history as this is the first acapella album to reach such a high position in the charts.
And although the group have expressed a desire to be considered just like any other band within the music industry, such as “Maroon 5” and “Coldplay” as they told Billboard’s Chris Martins a few weeks back, it cannot be ignored that Pentatonix exceed the typical image of one. Solely using vocal sounds to produce music like they do requires much more time, effort and talent – something which is deserving of a lot of attention. Attention which the group now seems to increasingly be gaining.
The chart topping self-titled album was released 16th October, and its lead single ‘Can’t Sleep Love’ is the fivesome’s first song to acquire chart success – save for some pieces from their Christmas album, ‘That’s Christmas to Me’, which was in fact 2014’s fourth highest selling album having charted in at Number #2 on the Billboard 200 last December.
For a group that started off by competing on and later winning the third season of NBC’s ‘The Sing-Off’ before going on to upload videos that have gained viral attention on YouTube, their successes in the charts and markings in the music world as of late are surely only the beginning for this acapella group.
