Hailing from Ireland, the award-winning soulful Dublin-born singer-songwriter RuthAnne has recently unveiled her highly-anticipated debut album ‘Matters Of The Heart‘, released on October 4th, 2019 via the independent record label, The Other Songs.
This brand new album takes you on a journey and familiarises you with the life of RuthAnne, chapter by chapter. From having a sheltered life, growing up in Ireland to moving to the dazzling Los Angeles to pursue a career in songwriting, the album takes you through major ups and downs of her life and illustrates her evolution into a strong, independent woman. With the release of this album, RuthAnne, being a prolific songwriter, is finally stepping out behind the writing desk of hits for popstars to an all-encompassing recording artist and releasing her own music.
With production by the likes of Fraser T Smith, Malay, Future Cut, Noah Breakfast and Sonny J Mason, the album is influenced with the classic and authentic songwriting that she was raised on with the R&B and pop sensibilities of the artists she has worked with, to her favorite 90s artists, new-soul and soft rock. ‘Matters of the Heart’ marks RuthAnne’s golden beginning as a solo artist, the highlight of which is the lead single ‘Take What I Can Get’. The opening song is co-written by RuthAnne, Rowe Composer, and Jez Ashurst that has the potential to easily unite fans of contemporary R&B with nostalgic for a classic soul melody. The song is a ‘Burt Bacharachy‘, as described by RuthAnne, which feels apt given its smoky arrangement. Packed with husky vocals, the song navigates from a romantic to a platonic relationship where the unrequited feelings are still lingering over.
The album also includes the widely successful track “The Vow” along with ‘Take My Place’, ‘Liquid’, ‘It Is What It Is’, ‘Love Again’, ‘Superman’ and ‘Unrequited’, and seven more exceptional brand new songs written by RuthAnne. ‘The Vow’ became overnight famous after it was played on the finale episode of popular TV reality show ‘Love Island- 2019’. Final. When asked about the inspiration of finally writing the album and exposing it to the world, RuthAnne said,
“I wrote a lot of my album ‘Matters Of The Heart’ after living in LA for five years and returning to home, Ireland & London. I’m a deep person who secretly wants to be a therapist and is fascinated with human nature in relationship. Why we treat each other the way we do; why we hurt the ones we love sometimes; why we stay with the wrong person; why we are afraid to let go; why are we never satisfied and why we find it so hard to love ourselves. Throughout my album you see a growth from brokenness to strength, from naivety to wisdom from complicated to clarity all through the nostalgia of classic soul, R&B, pop songs.”
As described by the singer-songwriter, the album is in three sections and it follows the timeline exactly of when each of the songs was written- from, heartbreak to hope, then to love. It’s a ‘growing up’ album that connects to everyone who is dealing with the matters of the heart in every encounter. Another hit track “Love Again” by RuthAnne is an open-hearted declaration of love. While the person is devoted to a new love who is trying to overcome the baggage of a previous toxic relationship. Blended with Ruth’s heartfelt powerhouse vocals, the lyrics of this track feel so personal, relatable and unflinching to the audience. RuthAnne also released the live session of the new song ‘Take What I Can Get’. Filmed and recorded with a full band and strings at the renowned Church Studios (Paul Epworth) in North London, the session was musically directed by Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse, Laura Mvula, Adele, Rag’n’Bone Man, Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter).
RuthAnne’s outstanding career includes penning hit songs and supporting huge pop artists such as JoJo, Britney Spears, One Direction, Niall Horan, Alanis Morrissette, Third Story, X Ambassadors, Hozierand KeywestMartin Garrix, Bebe Rexha’s and many more. In 2017, she co-wrote five songs on Niall Horan’s debut solo album ‘Flicker,’ including major hit and chart-topping track ‘Slow Hands’ and the recent release by Niall Horan “Nice To Meet Ya” from his upcoming sophomore album.
She previously won ‘Woman Of The Year’ at the Irish Tatler Awards and was VEVO’s ‘Artist Of The Month’ last year. RuthAnne has also supported on tour.
