The 2025 SAG Awards have wrapped, and if there’s one thing Sunday night proved, it’s that this awards season is far from predictable. What started as a night celebrating Hollywood’s finest quickly turned into a game-changer for some of the industry’s biggest contenders.
Conclave, a gripping thriller about the election of a new pope, pulled off a surprise win for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture—echoing its recent BAFTA triumph and officially cementing itself as a major Oscar threat. Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet stunned the crowd by beating out Adrien Brody for Best Actor, throwing a wrench into what many thought was a two-horse race for the Academy Awards.
His acceptance speech was as bold as his win, with the A Complete Unknown star declaring, “We’re in a subjective business, but the truth is I’m really in pursuit of greatness.” He elaborated, likening his artistic inspirations to legends not just in film, but in sports: “I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis, as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there.”
The television categories saw their own share of shake-ups. Sh?gun, the sweeping historical epic set in feudal Japan, continued its dominance, taking home four wins—including Best Ensemble in a Drama Series and acting trophies for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.
Only Murders in the Building had an unexpected victory streak as well, snatching Best Ensemble in a Comedy and a Best Actor win for Martin Short—who, as Steve Martin wryly pointed out, was absent due to catching COVID at SNL’s 50th anniversary special. Selena Gomez, however, was there to accept the honor and summed up the shock of the moment in four words: “We never win… Weird.”

Beyond the wins and upsets, the evening carried a tone of both celebration and reflection. Host and actress Kristen Bell opened the show with an emotional tribute to Los Angeles, a city still reeling from the devastation of this year’s wildfires. The audience also witnessed a powerful call to action from Jane Fonda, who, while accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award, urged Hollywood to stay engaged in activism, even in an increasingly fraught political climate. “This is big time serious, folks,” she warned.
Technical hiccups and all, the night made one thing clear: this is an awards season full of surprises. And with the 2025 Oscars looming, this year’s SAG Award winners may have just redrawn the battle lines for who will take home gold next.
