Fans of the Alien films, rejoice! The franchise is not done and dusted just yet. Sigourney Weaver has talked about the idea of Aliens 5 and the fact that she is pleased with the ending of her iconic character, Ripley.
Aliens director, James Cameron and the cast including Weaver and Michael Bien (who played Hicks in the famous franchise) are going to be coming together at Comic-Con 2016 for a 30th anniversary discussion about the film at a panel of their own.
Weaver, herself, is excited and ready to go with a new story for Ripley and it is one she is very pleased with.
Neill Blomkamp is in the director’s chair and was prompted to pitch an idea for a new Alien film when working with Weaver on a film called Chappie last year.
The project has since gained some traction after concept art for Aliens 5 was released by Blomkamp himself. The images show Weaver and Bien as their character Ripley and Hicks as well as the character Newt as an older version of herself, ready for a comeback.
However, although the ball seemed to have gotten rolling on Aliens 5, Ridley Scott has now stalled the process as he is following up his Alien prequel Prometheus with Alien: Covenant and, naturally, doesn’t want his films to be overshadowed by this upcoming development.
So, Alien: Covenant is going into production first which has put Blomkamp’s plans on hold. But Weaver still seems to be up for doing Aliens 5 as she revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the story Blomkamp has created will “give this woman an ending”, referring to Ripley.
“It’s a great story and it’s satisfying to me to give this woman an ending… The script itself has so much in it that’s so original, but also really satisfies the, I would say, the primal needs of the aliens.”
“It’s a tribute to all of the great work that the other directors have done, in a way, but goes in a completely new direction. I hope we’ll do it.”
Weaver also revealed that Aliens 5 will completely ignore the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection and pick up after Aliens.
The concept art seems to confirm this as well as Hicks and Newt are featured in the images.
But there is some bad news for fans as there are no plans to start filming Aliens 5 any time soon.
The busy schedules of Blomkamp and Weaver also proves that it is too difficult to find time to fit Aliens 5 in right now.
Weaver, in particular, is busy with numerous upcoming Avatar sequels directed by James Cameron and Blomkamp has now busied himself with The Gone World, a film adaptation of the Thomas Sweterlitsch’s novel while his ideas for Aliens 5 have been paused.
“Fox asked us to delay so Ridley could shoot his [second] Prometheus movie. That was too bad because we would have already done it by now.
“Now that we’re waiting for that, I have a couple of Avatars to do and Neill has The Gone World, so we’ll have to see what happens when we get back, when those projects are over.” Weaver said honestly to EW.
Although Blomkamp is eager to make the movie, there are no further plans to shoot but Weaver is definitely up for another challenge as Ripley.
Perhaps fans will learn more at the Aliens Comic-Con panel so keep an eye out for updates online!
It will certainly be awesome if Weaver comes back as the kickass Ripley! She’s been sorely missed!
