SINGLE REVIEW: Shawn Mendes’ ‘Youth’ Featuring Khalid

Canadian superstar Shawn Mendes and American sensation Khalid are two of the most influential music artists from our generation so when it was announced that they had teamed up for a brand new single ‘Youth‘ which is taken off Mendes’ upcoming self-titled album, I just knew the results would be spectacular and I was spot on.

‘Youth’ is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. The poignant lyrics were inspired by the tragic events that occurred at the Ariana Grande concert on May 22nd, 2017 in Manchester that claimed 22 innocent lives and injured hundreds more. That heinous attack shook the world but the music world came together and showed that fear will never win and this track highlights those feelings that love will always win over terror.

Shawn Mendes and Khalid have created an anthem that will strike a chord with Millennials all over the globe and will no doubt resonate with older listeners from generations gone by. Lyrics such as “Waking up to headlines/Filled with devastation again/My heart is broken/But I keep going” will hit home to all listeners who are used to dreading a breaking news instalment for fear of hearing of more devastation around the world.

Other poignant, moving lyrics include the powerful chorus which Khalid and Mendes join forces on to create a spine-tingling moment; “You can’t take my youth away/This soul of mine will never break/As long as I wake up today/You can’t take my youth away”.

‘Youth’ is so powerful and Shawn has once again showcased his songwriting ability to the world and has confirmed his place as one of the best all round musicians of our generation.
