Google what is the meaning of life and you’ll find answers like “to realize one’s potential and ideals” or “to seek wisdom and knowledge”. We often ask ourselves what it all means and ponder ways in which we can unearth deeper truth. That is exactly what SPELLES does in their haunting release “Beginnings and Endings”. The piece is bold and brooding with haunting falsetto gently floating across intense, eerie backdrops. The track’s dark sound washes over listeners and the result is utterly spellbinding. Her fiery tone sings, “scenes play in my mind, they are rewinding, all of my life looking behind me.” It is human nature to replay parts of our lives over and over in our head. Sometimes it can be easier to look backwards than to move forward, but just as the title states it is important to focus on the beginnings and the endings.
The Los Angeles based project is made up of songwriters, instrumentalists and producers Kathryn Baar and Luc Laurent. The two are known for their lush, atmospheric quality. The song is the second single off of SPELLES’ upcoming debut album Diving Into the Arms of the Divine set to drop this winter. Baar reveals, “We produced this body of songs entirely on our own during the past four years. The process of creating the record really stretched us and caused us to progress a lot as music creators. It’s filled with different moods and sonic influences and provides a good example of how our music project has evolved in recent years.”
