Star2 is an Asian-American rapper known for his high-energy and confident anthems, yet on his latest release “Pain”, he takes a step inward for a groundbreaking display of depth. The single is a collaboration between Star2 and Lil Poppa (signed with Yo Gotti’s CMG label) that discusses each rapper’s relationship with pain and coping mechanisms for dealing with heavy emotions.
“Pain” incorporates a melancholy piano riff, dark and ethereal rhythmics, and vocal contrast as Star2 appears downtrodden during his verses and infuriated at the chorus, mimicking his deep emotions associated with pain. The music video follows Star2 and Lil Poppa as each rapper performs in a dim-lit atmosphere, often pictured sitting in a leather chair to mimic the effect of a therapist’s office. Lil Poppa and Star2 are vehemently honest about their sources of affliction including drug use, heartbreak, and isolation that makes each rapper feel pain. Star2 reminds listeners that pain is unique to each individual and offers an empathetic outcry as he sings, “If you were in my shoes, you’ll feel the same way. It’s okay, it’s my pain. I’ll find a way to fix it.” A soft and melodic turn for Star2 and Lil Poppa as the two rappers bear their souls, “Pain” is a powerful performance offering insight on each artist’s true and unfiltered feelings.
Star2 is a dynamic collaborator who has worked alongside musicians such as Soulja Boy, Luh Kel, and Mozzy. He was born in Thailand at a refugee camp before he moved to San Diego where he was raised by his grandmother. His upcoming, highly anticipated EP is set for release in 2023.
