Legendary guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller was honored with the 2025 Les Paul Spirit Award during a special celebration held Monday night (June 9) at the Gibson Garage in Nashville.
The tribute held particular resonance for the artist: the date marked what would have been Les Paul’s 110th birthday, and Miller, who shared a deep personal connection to the late guitar innovator as his godson, accepted the award in a moment that blended legacy, memory, and music.
Presented annually by the Les Paul Foundation in partnership with Gibson Gives, the award recognizes artists who embody Les Paul’s groundbreaking contributions to music, technology, and creative innovation. Past recipients include Bob Weir, Nile Rodgers, Peter Frampton, and The Edge.

Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of the Les Paul Foundation, presented the award following remarks from Gibson CEO Cesar Gueikian and Chief Marketing Officer Beth Heidt. All three emphasized Miller’s decades-long trailblazing career and his influence on modern guitar music—qualities that align closely with Les Paul’s pioneering ethos.
The physical award trophy itself carries special significance. It’s crafted from acoustic wood boards hand-carved by Les Paul for use in his home studio, lending a tangible connection to the late icon’s legacy. In a further tribute, the Les Paul Foundation announced a grant in Miller’s name to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s music education program, a cause personally chosen by Miller.
Taking the stage after accepting the honor, Steve Miller reflected on the mentorship and inspiration Les Paul offered him throughout his life. He then performed a spirited set of his signature hits, including “The Joker” and “Fly Like an Eagle”, to a crowd of fans, musicians, and industry insiders. The evening culminated in a rare and meaningful celebration where personal history and musical legacy converged.
