Singer-songwriter SevvTheArtist does R&B right—real right, as witnessed by her deluxe, sensuous voice on her latest single/music video, “BLU.”
Born in Greensboro, NC, and raised on a steady diet of soul and jazz, Sevv grew up toying with the titillating tones of saxophone and trombone. Dipping her toes into live performances, she felt the energetic flow made possible by music.
With the release of her 2020 debut EP, Pre-K, she caught the attention of the entire music industry.
Subsequent releases have landed on R&B radio, TIDAL’s Rising R&B playlist, Sirius XM’s Heart & Soul, BET Soul, and Music Choice R&B Soul.
The slow jam vibe of “BLU” creates an indigo landscape of emotional uncertainty in a rocky relationship, highlighted by Sevv’s creamy, seductive tones, oozing voluptuous nuances.
Impressed and intrigued, CelebMix spoke with SevvTheArtist to find out more about the inspiration for “BLU,” and how the video came together.
What made you want to become an artist?
At a young age, I was very expressive. I went through traumatic experiences as a child, and I lost my spark. I became more reserved and introverted. Music became a powerful outlet for me to express myself and connect with my emotions, during challenging times.
How has growing up in Greensboro, North Carolina influenced your music?
Greensboro has been nicknamed ‘The Gate City’ where people get stuck here. Leaving my hometown in Greensboro and relocating to different cities and states has allowed me to dream bigger and expand my horizons. That change in surroundings provided new perspectives, opportunities, and challenges that encouraged my personal growth and the pursuit of my aspirations. I believe leaving my hometown and real-life experiences has had more impact on my music.
What is the meaning behind the name SevvTheArtist?
I’m named after my grandmother, Charlotte. My first name is Charlotte, Charlotte, NC’s area code is 704 – I took the seven from the area code and abbreviated it to Sevv and added the artist.
Where do you usually find inspiration when writing your songs?
Real-life experiences are my inspiration. What I’m going through, what I’ve been through, what someone else may be going through.
What was the inspiration behind “BLU”?
‘BLU’ was inspired by infidelity and exploring the theme of curiosity and self-discovery in the LGBTQ+ communities. Relationships, their complexities, and the exploration of one’s sexuality are themes that resonate with many individuals. I was inspired to initiate the conversation.
What was the experience like working on the music video for “BLU”?
It was a beautiful, yet challenging process. It took a while to secure production. We ran into a lot of challenges with locations, extras, and editing. Once we got the right people in the right places, it was seamless to execute.
What advice would you give to other artists just starting out?
I’m still starting out myself. I’d say, be yourself. Be authentic and stay consistent, build your champions, and your people will find you.
What is next for you?
I’m continuing to build my sound, my catalog, and my image ahead of my debut album. Look forward to new music, and all things SevvTheArtist.
