Mechanical synth-pop project The New Division creates a nostalgic 80s-eques sound with a unique contemporary twist. The 10-track album Modern Life beautifully examines themes of our co-dependence to technology and making your way in a society that is continuously evolving. The dark, synth backdrops and passionate vocals make for a wholly hypnotic body of work.
The title-track and album opener is “Modern Life”. Reminiscent of groups like New Order and Duran Duran, the spirited single features bold vocals skating atop vibrant electro sonics. John Kunkel, the brainchild behind The New Division reveals, “This track was easily one of the most difficult ones to finish since I had a very specific vision for it. Originally I thought it might work as a softer ballad-like song but I ended up deciding it would work really great as an energetic opener for the album.” “Circles” has that same shiny, industrialized sound. Along with Trade Secrets’ band member Charles LeBarbara they were able to craft the perfect boisterous bassline. While in “Soft Cell”, The New Division captures a raw energy that is pure infection. The listener cannot help but be drawn in by its lush, addictive landscapes and seductive tone.
Kunkel is a Los Angeles based talent with deep Brazilian roots. Influenced by the retro sounds of acts such as Depeche Mode, the radiant, moody quality is magic. Within his music he dives into things like the world’s disarray and strong feelings of isolation and loneliness. It is topics like these that make The New Division so intense and compelling.
