Earlier this year, we introduced you to LA based duo VOILÀ, who captured our hearts with their double release ‘Hundredth Second Chance’ and ‘Lately’.
Since then, the duo, made up of Luke Eisner and Gus Ross, have released a string of tracks which have garnered the attention of music lovers and tastemakers globally, including Billboard, Pandora and BBC Introducing.
On Friday, VOILÀ dropped their latest offering ‘Don’t’ and we’re not afraid to say that it might be our favourite release from the duo to date. Co-produced & co-written with INFRARED (Lewis Capaldi, Charlotte Lawrence), ‘Don’t’ is a captivating acoustic pop ballad which discusses the trials and tribulations of a toxic relationship.
Opening with the lyric “Everybody and their mother say we ain’t good for each other, but we ain’t good for anyone else”, the track perfectly captures the essence of being in a relationship which you know isn’t good for you, however, it’s almost impossible to pull yourself away from it. The heartbreaking nature of the song continues with lyrics such as “You’re the reason I quit drinking, you’re the reason I get drunk”, which highlights the destructive love/hate nature of the relationship.
Teamed up with powerful vocals and an anthemic chorus, ‘Don’t’ is a stunning offering from VOILÀ which exudes raw emotion and will resonate with anyone who’s ever been in a similar situation.
Speaking about ‘Don’t’, lead vocalist Gus said: “I can’t control who I fall for. I can only acknowledge and embrace the sensation of wanting what I know full well isn’t good for me.”
Luke, the band’s lyricist, shared a personal anecdote which relates to the message of the song. “Growing up, there was this willow tree in my front yard. I would always try to climb it, but it was tough. My parents would yell at me and say I was going to get hurt, my friends would say I was wasting my time, and I still have a scar from falling,” Luke said. “But, what they didn’t know is that when you got to the top you could see the most beautiful view. A view that made you forget every reason you hated the climb. I fell in love with a girl that was like that willow tree.”
‘Don’t’ received its premiere on BBC Music Introducing Solent and has even made its way into the top 20 of Spotify’s New Music Playlist. Since its release, the song has also amassed over 90,000 streams across Spotify.
‘Don’t’ is taken from VOILÀ’s forthcoming debut album which is expected for release in 2019. The duo will also be heading out on their own tour next year, allowing them to showcase their personal releases in a live setting, which we couldn’t be more excited for.
There’s no doubt that VOILÀ have a stunning future ahead of them. Having impressed with their debut singles at the beginning of the year, they have continued to grow from strength to strength and the thought of what they can produce with their forthcoming album is truly thrilling. The duo ooze passion, truth and emotion, all of the ingredients which make them bona fide stars in our eyes.
