The Weeknd says he may retire his stage name, ‘The Weeknd’.
Speaking to Harpers Bazaar, the singer, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, said he may follow in the footsteps of the late David Bowie, who at one time created an onstage persona named Ziggy Stardust.
“I kind feel like pulling a Ziggy Stardust.” the Starboy singer said.
“Maybe I’ll retire from being The Weeknd.”
“Or maybe I’ll just give him a break.”
Though he didn’t elaborate any further on his ideas, The Weeknd was keen to stress that he is determined to keep his private life, private.
“I’m not in a rush to let people know everything about me, mystery is always great.”
“Luckily, the only thing the world demands of me is music. I don’t have to give them anything else for the rest of my life.”
In recent years The Weeknd has become one of the most successful male solo recording artists in the world.
Since the release of his debut album ‘Kiss Land’ and breakout singles like ‘Kiss Land’ and ‘Live For’ in 2013, Abel / The Weeknd has worked stopped.
In 2015 he released his second solo album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ which hit number 1 in Canada, Australia, Sweden, the U.K. and America and to date has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.
He is currently in the middle of a hugely successful world tour, ‘Starboy: Legend of the Fall’ in support of his most recent album ‘Starboy’.
