BROCKHAMPTON released their fifth studio album, GINGER, and while jam-packed with chaos and genre-bending singles, the album feels relevant, eccentric and expressive of who they are.
It’s not easy to explain who BROCKHAMPTON is — with so many members, personalities and musical styles to keep track of, “the best boyband since One Direction” is undeniably changing the way music is categorized, criticized and appreciated.
And following the structural changes that ensued following the departure of founding member, Ameer Vann, GINGER encapsulates where the band finds itself in music and in life.
Where the Saturation trilogy felt like musical and creative vomit (in the best sense of the word), GINGER feels more thought out — each toss and turn on this album feels intentional.

GINGER gradually tells a story — of heartache, growth and moving forward.
It finds its peak with DEARLY DEPARTED, a song that garnered attention for how raw and emotional it is — it ends with Dom McLennon yelling out of anger and frustration and what sounds like him throwing something out of frustration.
Pass the weight off to your friends and never face the truth / Because you never learned how to be a man / And it’s not my fault, and it’s not my problem anymore / That’s just where you stand / That’s just who you are / That’s your cross to bear
So with everything, what are the three defining songs off of GINGER? SUGAR, BOY BYE AND ST. PERCY.
Each of these songs feels like a defining moment for the band — each feels central to the GINGER era.
And seeing as the group is set to tour this fall (with the wonderfully titled “Heaven Belongs To You” tour), we cannot wait to see what the setlist looks like.
