We knew that new music from Carrie Underwood was on its way after she dropped a teasing Instagram post that revealed that new music would be released on Wednesday. Yesterday came along and sure to her word, the American Idol winner dropped “Cry Pretty”. What we didn’t expect was a beautiful lyric video to accompany the song.
The single is the follow-up to “The Champion“, which was a collaboration with Ludacris – it was released as the opening theme to NBC’s television broadcast of Super Bowl LII. This new single makes a jump back to her country roots, exciting us for new music.
“Cry Pretty” is taken from her upcoming sixth studio album that Carrie Underwood has been working hard on. It’s been a bit of a wait and she went silent on her socials recently after she took a tumble at her home in Nashville, where she ended up breaking her wrist and damaging her face – she needed between 40 and 50 stitches. According to her blog post, she’s 90% healed.
Talking on her blog about the new single, Carrie Underwood said: “It’s called ‘Cry Pretty’ and I wrote it with three incredible women: Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose, and Lori McKenna, who also write under the name Love Junkies. I joined one of their writing sessions last year to see if we could come up with some magic…and we did! The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back. It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life. It’s emotional. It’s real. And it ROCKS!”

The song has a powerful country-rock spin to it, reminding us of the time she performed “Last Name” at the 2009 Grammy’s with a backing band which featured female guitarist, Orianthi; or even when she sang “Dirty Laundry” at the 2016 CMA’s, where Orianthi also performed as her guitarist. This definitely has that same sort of style, and we can’t wait to hear it live.
This country singer continues to prove she deserved to win American Idol’s fourth season, and she’s still currently the top-selling American Idol contestant – yes, in front of Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry. This single is empowering and we agree that it’s not possible to cry pretty.
The lyric video brings glittery words and imagery with the lyrics being in a cursive font, which does make it difficult to read; however, Carrie Underwood’s beautiful voice really brings the song to life. We can’t help but adore this track.
