Yesterday we started the brand new year, 2018; and, in the spirit of the celebration, we’ve decided to take a look back on the many EPs that have been released in 2017. There has been a whole range of EPs containing different amount of tracks.
Each of our writers have chosen an EP from 2017 that they have adored. Usually, EPs either introduce a new artist or is a lead-up to a full album that will be released at a later date. This is what makes EPs so great because they are a taster of what is to come from this artist.
We believe as the following years go by, more and more EPs will be released; both by major artists in the industry, rising stars, and newcomers. We literally can’t wait to see what 2018 brings, but before we do, take a look at the EPs we reckon you need to listen to.
New Hope Club – Welcome To The Club – Chosen by Nicola Craig (CelebMix Writer)
“Having watched New Hope Club progress as a band from the days of playing their first shows to releasing their debut EP, it’s been a great journey. ‘Welcome To The Club’, for me, signified the start of a bright future with their guitar-driven sound and unique vocals. Leaving it to become my most played EP of the year!”

Frank Iero And The Patience – Keep The Coffins Coming – Chosen by Michele Mendez (CelebMix Writer)
“Frank Iero and the Patience’s ‘Keep the Coffins Coming’ is definitely worth the listen. Although the EP only contains four tracks, each song has its own sound delivered with raw emotion.”

Mabel – Bedroom – Chosen by Byaregal (CelebMix Writer)
“Mabel is for sure one to watch in 2018. Vocals for days on this groovy four-track record. I look forward to watching her make her mark in the Pop/R&B world.”
Julia Michaels – Nervous System – Chosen by Cayla Masters (CelebMix Writer)
“After writing so many bops for other artists, I was impatiently waiting for the day Julia dropped bangers of her own. ‘Nervous System’ does not disappoint.”
Why Don’t We – Invitation – Chosen by Jess (CelebMix Writer)
“‘Invitation’ by Why Don’t We is the EP of boyband music I’ve been missing since One Direction! I will always have a soft spot in my heart for boybands, and Why Don’t We definitely execute the ‘boyband feel’ amazingly.”
RoadTrip – Tokyo Hotel – Chosen by Rachel Dempster (CelebMix Writer)
“I was actually pleasantly surprised by this EP, as it can be hard for a band to follow up on such a brilliant first EP. This EP no doubt resonated with their fans.”

Bronnie – Social Rejex – Chosen by Jonathan Currinn (CelebMix Editor)
“We all waited patiently for Bronnie to drop her debut EP and it was better than any of us could’ve expected. Truly bringing back pop-rock and making it extremely current, this EP brings something we’ve all been missing. However, ‘Imaginary Friend’, completely stands out and shows off Bronnie’s amazing vocals.”

Chris Bourne – In Your Arms – Chosen by Niki Smith (CelebMix Writer)
“Chris’s second EP is amazing. I fell in love with the title track ‘In Your Arms’ and it sounds even more perfect live! Chris is working on another EP so I can’t wait to see him grow even more in 2018.”

Jessie James Decker – Gold – Chosen by Zoe Adams (CelebMix Writer)
“My favourite EP of 2017 is definitely, “Gold”, by Jessie James Decker. I really think that it is her strongest work to date and I absolutely adore the way her voice sounds on every single track. And while every song on it is great, I definitely recommend that you listen to the title track on the album before any other. It’s so beautiful!”
Ryan Hurd – Ryan Hurd – Chosen by Lynn Macgillivray (CelebMix Writer)
“Ryan Hurd is relatively new to the country music world but I already love him. I could listen to his music all day, it is just so beautiful and his voice has that husky edge to it. I was also lucky enough to see Ryan in Glasgow on Maren Morris’ tour and he was incredible, I can’t wait to hear a full album from him.”
Dua Lipa – Live Acoustic – Chosen by Azra (CelebMix Writer)
“I’m a sucker for a good acoustic sound. Her voice is so powerful and it really comes to show in the songs. The lyrics also sound very deep and personal, especially ‘Golden Slumbers’.”
Lauv – I met you when I was 18 – Chosen by Ayushi (CelebMix Writer)
Technically a playlist, all tracks are tracks by Lauv. “Lauv’s songs have been one of my best discoveries of 2017. Each song within the playlist puts forth a narrative and carries a night-time sound which makes one feel surreal while listening. The best thing about this EP is that while some of the songs have electronic music, they aren’t too loud. It’s a pretty balanced playlist.”
David Mark Bulley – Prologue – Chosen by Katrina Rees (CelebMix Editor)
“2017 saw singer-songwriter David Mark Bulley release his long-awaited ‘Prologue’ EP, most of which has been in the making for around four years. It was great to get to hear some of his life story, through music. The track of the EP for me is ‘Black Rainbow’ – it slays my life every time I listen to it.”

Bebe Rexha – All Your Fault – Chosen by Ashley Dye (CelebMix Editor)
“The tunes are the kind that you can listen to when you’re out with friends, driving, or singing in your kitchen. Her voice is stunning, her lyrics are awesome, and her talent is unstoppable.”
dodie – You – Chosen by Annemarie Cutruzzola (CelebMix Writer)
“This choice is a lot more personal for me; being a big fan of dodie’s previous EP ‘Intertwined’, and her YouTube channels, I already knew and loved 4 out of the 6 songs on ‘You’ before it was released. I think this EP is dodie’s best work, from showing vulnerability and openness about her struggles with mental health on ‘Secrets for the Mad’ and social anxiety on ‘6/10’ (both songs that really spoke to me) to making more light-hearted bops like ‘In The Middle’ and ‘Would You Be So Kind’. But my favourite has to be the title track, ‘You’, with the Parisian tinged instrumentals, and the relatable yet melancholy sentiment of a failed relationship with a seemingly perfect person.”
Coldplay – Kaleidoscope – Chosen by Kelly McFarland (CelebMix Editor)
“It’s Coldplay. Anything that Coldplay does deserves a mention because they are musical legends!”
Charlotte Cardin – Main Girl – Chosen by J Lauren (CelebMix Writer)
“Charlotte Cardin is vastly underrated. Every single song on ‘Main Girl’ is catchy, and her vocals are so strong, yet incredibly pleasant. I have been listening to one track, ‘Dirty Dirty’, for months now, and I still haven’t grown sick of it.”
We don’t expect you to have listened to them all, but if you have we applaud you! There may have been many great EPs in 2017 but they weren’t the only favourites of ours.
